Any Young Dudes?

Post by BriefExcursion20 » Wed Aug 25, 2021 1:54 pm

In the past few days I've been on the forum, I've been curious about something -

Is there anyone else here in their 20s to early 30s that currently rock the speedo?

As a young guy yourself, why do you think speedos are not popular among youngsters? Polo players and divers still wear them.

I guess young dudes are a lot more self conscious about themselves at this age, and therefore, showing off more body isn't exactly a comfortable prospect for some.

I am 34. I used to wear speedos when I was a child but started wearing board shorts on top of them in my teenage. It took me a while to get back to just speedo.

Now, I am wearing my speedos proudly for my swim at the community pool every morning.

I think that the last time speedos had any cultural relevance in the US, it was probably during the 1980's. Like I recall a Phil Donahue show (he had a daytime talk show kind of like Oprah before she came along) from the late 80's where he had a fashion show for the upcoming beach season's fashion trends, and a couple of the guys in the show wore speedos. You'd NEVER see that nowadays.

I also remember when Speedo had physical stores in the 90's (called "Speedo Authentic Fitness"), where they sold speedos (including 1" solars!) on the rack just like any other swimsuit. But those stores are long gone.

So all that to say that for the guys who are younger- in their 20s or 30s, they've never lived in a world where speedos were ever seen in public at all, except maybe around a swim team- and even then most kids these days wear jammers... when I was a kid they didn't exist, so you HAD to wear a speedo if you were on a swim team.

So kudos to you younger guys for wearing them despite them being even more uncommon than they were for us old timers.

Good point, well made!

When I was in my teens or 20s many fairly small towns had sports shops and it was quite normal to have a window display including speedos.

All kids wore speedos for swimming so they were not looked on as unusual.

I started to wear speedos in public at 25 (10 years ago). As part of a master swimming club, it was an easy way to start. Then a couple of years later, I started to wear them on the beach during a travel to France (côte d’azur). After than I never looked back and always wear them even in front of family and friends :) .

I visited Nice and Monaco with my parents when I was in my teens. I really want to go back. It was like going to another planet.

Isn’t it! Plenty of speedos, although mostly on older man. Lot of topless women as well. It seems that people over there are not self conscious of their body at all and wear freely what they want. Nobody is shocked either to see people in such tiny attires, it is just normal.

It’s been a slow mission creep to demonise men showing their ‘manliness’ since the late ‘80s. Speedos and speedo wearers became figures of fun in the media. Imagine body shaming a woman who wears a bikini. You’d be castigated. Poke fun at a guy- perfectly acceptable.
