Fashion week

Post by fourof14 » Tue Jun 18, 2019 6:36 am

It would seem to be that Fashion Week is on in June of this year.
I have been wondering if or when new swim suit designs come out, and is it the same world wide?
I found this: https://fashionweekonline.com/event/fif ... ce_id=6912
I’m wondering if anyone on this board follows Speedo trends, and when or how often the styles change? Also whether anyone has any insight as to where swim suit fashion is headed? I’m still of the mind that, more is less. Or in other words. The more you don’t cover, the less I have to use my imagination. 😂 okay, sorry. Still, I’d like to know is swimwear seasonal to your location, or does it follow some arbitrary fashion trend? Thanks for your response in advance.

I was cleaning out my desk yesterday and came across the "beach" issue of GQ from 2004. They had a Bruce Weber photoshoot with all the girls in bikinis and all the guys in some sort of small speedo/sunga swimwear. (Amazing shoot!) Those pics could have been taken this year, and nobody would know! IMO, Guys styles haven't changed much in terms of fit/cut/pattern for the spandex suits in the last 20 years. I think you'd have to get back to the 80s/90s to see a difference.

But, even with the fashionistas pushing it, clearly the masses didn't switch to speedo suits in 2004.

Today however, I think the fashionistas are winning in making baggy trunks much shorter. All my straight friends this year have switched to mid-thigh trunks. No more knee length boardshorts. That's huge progress!

Hey, this is an interesting question and I hope my response somewhat answers the OPs question!

I work at a swimwear brand called Orlebar Brown, makers of “tailored men’s swim shorts”. Whilst we only do one ‘speedo’ style, the actual cut of the swim brief doesn’t change each season, year on year. Same goes for the swim shorts. What does change is the colours or prints that it’s offered in.

We work to four fashions seasons per year (spring/summer, high summer, cruise, autumn/winter) and smaller companies may just work to two or choose not to produce seasonal collections. Some fashion brands have started to do ‘drops’ whereby they release smaller collections or even items more frequently, hoping to sustain interest in their products. This method of selling has come from the street wear market where brands such as Supreme do product drops in limited numbers so keep exclusivity.

In terms of where the trends are headed, I recently came across this article:
https://www.gq.com.au/style/news/is-20 ... 2f851de37d which states that the ‘speedo’ style is becoming evermore popular. This is something I have noticed, not only because I work in fashion but have seen it whilst travelling and on the scene. I can put this down to two things really: this style of swimwear is worn by predominantly gay and bisexual men who, and certainly in the west, are finding it’s becoming easier for them to express themselves and therefore feel confident wearing them. Attitudes are definitely changing, just look at the title of the article.

Furthermore, with the rise of Instagram, there has been more pressure on men in general to be in better shape and flaunt their bodies on social media, whereby posting photos in skimpy swimwear is more likely to gain attention - coming back to the OPs ‘more is less’ idea!

I totally agree with you on that gay and bisexual men are becoming more comfortable expressing themselves by wearing speedos. I remember not that long ago it was pretty radical to wear a speedo on a so called “straight” beach. People would stare or try and take pictures. Now I can even wear a thong swimsuit and no one cares.

Absolutely.

No matter what you think of him, one of the first guys I noticed who jumped on this trend was self-proclaimed "King of Instagram" Dan Bilzerian, who relentlessly pimps as alpha-hetero an image as you'll find. Now if HE, of all people, were to don a pair of swim briefs (and I don't think it would be a stretch for him), speedos would really be onto something.

Never heard of Mr Bilzerian, but if alpha-male, macho insta-whatevers are promoting the speedo look that can only be a good thing in my book. If they're promoting a more fitted short for swimming, that's a cool thing too.

Don't you just hate it when something you'd been quietly doing for years suddenly becomes all the rage? But then again, some of us (speedo-wearers in general) have always been ahead of the curve style-wise!

Also it is HOT WEEK. According to my television set there are people dying in the extreme heat out there. The news showed a very crowded beach full of people trying to cool off. Mostly noticeable to me was that just about everybody was obese. EXCEPT one very fit young fellow in a black speedo. Plain as could be, but unfortunately the camera did not zoom in on the bulge to show whether there was any VPL . LOL. Stay cool, dudes. Remember to drink lots of water, no soda pop unless there's a lot of rum mixed in.
