an old girlfriend who is passed told me once if you feel uncomfortable wearing a speedo if u don't know anybody there just go down the stairs into pool, now i go in my local pool, only time i don't wear my speedos is when my buddies are nearby! dhs52dno98 wrote:I've been dreaming about this for years (diveguy, your story resonates with me very strongly).
I am a competitive cyclist but have tendonitis in one of my toes, so I haven't been on the bike in almost a month. Instead, my doctor suggested I take up swimming. I've had jammers for years- before I got into cycling I used to swim laps regularly, though I've never been on a team. But it wasn't until the last few years that I have gotten skinny enough, IMO, to actually wear a speedo and look decent in it. So as soon as I got back into swimming laps a few times a week, I realized this was the perfect opportunity to FINALLY come out of the closet, as it were, and start swimming laps in a speedo.
I had gamed this scenario out in my head hundreds- maybe thousands- of times, but had never felt confident enough to pull the trigger. Yesterday afternoon I put on a speedo (standard black 3" training suit), hiked my boardies over them, and drove over to the pool. I had it in my head "if the pool is too crowded or if there's someone I know I can just keep the boardies on over the speedo and swim my laps per usual" (though that normally meant jammers). So I walk out onto the deck, and every lane is full. Damn. I'm going to have to expose myself in my suit to someone in very close proximity. I start getting nervous- but I also think, "you came here, you're already in a speedo, who gives a sh*t, JUST DO IT." So just as I'm taking my shoes, shirt, wedding ring, etc. off at the end of the pool, one of the lanes empties out. Thank god.
So I take a deep breath, put my thumbs in the waist band of my boardies, and shoop... there I am. Exposed to the world. In a speedo. And it felt LIBERATING.
I jump in, and realize after my first 50m that I'd left my water bottle by my stuff. So I get pull myself out of the pool and walk back over to my stuff, in full display to everyone. Nobody laughed. Nobody even took a second look. What a relief.
Anyway, by the end of 45-50 minutes of laps, the lifeguard blows the whistle that the pool is closing. So I hauled myself out, gathered up my stuff, and walked, in just my speedo, the full length of the pool in front of probably 15 people to the locker rooms.
Next up... how to explain to the wife... (She knows neither of my turn on nor my new predilection for swimming laps in a speedo). I don't know that I'll ever be able to tell her how turned on speedos make me, but I think at the very least I can get her used to the idea that her husband wears speedos when swimming for fitness. She's certainly been very cool with me shaving my legs and wearing tight cycling kits.
Sorry to go on, guys. But this is a big step for me! Thanks for reading!

Re: Finally wore in public.
Last week the main lap pool at my Y was closed, so I had to "swim" in the family pool. There were a bunch of kids and parents and older folk around. No one said anything that I could hear. I had a good time, and yes, it felt quite liberating!

Eventually you learn in some areas Noone cares or pays attention to you when you are swimming

Just remember, it gets easier each time you do it, and the feeling is incredible! Both in the water and laying out in the sun.
