Best places in Hawaii?
So I'm going to be in Hawaii (Oahu, staying in Honolulu) and was wondering if anyone has any ideas for best places (beaches, outdoors, etc) that are speedo friendly? Would love to also hear any stores or attractions I should visit. I'm looking to get my tan on

20-something year old asian boy who loves speedos.

Re: Best places in Hawaii?
Great place to visit dude, been there when I was 12 but I was on Maui. Definitely bring your speedos! But heads up definitely bring sunscreen it can get very hot their on sunny days, but cloudy days are mostly humid. Just a heads up for your trip.
Re: Best places in Hawaii?
i might be going to Kauai in the fall.
Re: Best places in Hawaii?
Summer is tourist season and Waikiki beach is by far the most popular tourist beaches in the area. You might see some foreigners wearing them. Also if you walk towards Diamond Head on Waikiki beach (with Aloha Tower behind you) just past Waikiki, you may see a higher percentage of guys wearing Speedos there too. When I lived in Hawaii 20 yrs ago, I think it was known to be a gay friendly area of the beach. I went there a few times specifically to wear speedos. I wasn't into the scene (if there was even one) but instead I thought if I had to wear speedos, that would be the area where I know no one who knew me would see me.
Side story that I may have mentioned in prior posts: Hawaii is the place where I purchased my first pair of speedos again in my mid 20's after the pair I had in jr. highschool. I still remember them because the suit was so god awful. I still cringe thinking about them to this day. They were blue floral Tan Thru brand, 1" sides swim briefs - bikini style & high on the hips. I'm laughing at myself as I am typing this because I can't believe I actually wore them in public. They fit me so bad that I looked like I had this hanging sack down there. I am not claiming to be big but the suit offered zero support - and I mean ZERO! I probably wore them 3 times until I finally admitted to myself that I looked horrendous in the suit and they should never be worn by me again. In the end, the suit just sat in my drawer until the lycra dry rotted and I threw them away. To this day, I will never buy a bikini cut (high on the hips & small on the butt) suit again. I don't know if it is because I am short or what but bikini style suits look awful on me. It must of scarred me because I didn't seek out another pair until I was in my mid 30's and in need of speedos. As a reference, here is the style of suit that I had: http://www.tanthrudirect.com/detail2013.html I can't believe they still make them let along I actually paid money for one...
Good luck and have fun! It's a fun place to visit much more than it is to live.

Re: Best places in Hawaii?
I too bought and started wearing my first Speedo while spending time on Oahu. A sleek, tight little black Speedo with true 1" sides. Here's how speedo friendly Hawaii is: every store that sells swimsuits sells speedos, no matter if it's a small "ABC Store" (touristy little convenience store, they're everywhere!), a dive shop where you can rent your scuba and snorkel gear, or a big department store like Macy's, Walmart, or Target. I bought my tiny black Speedo at Sears. Yes, Sears, at the Ala Moana Shopping Center. That store no longer exists there, sadly, but there are plenty of other places to buy speedos still.
So where to wear it then? Anywhere where swimsuits are worn in general. Don't wear it to a luau, but definitely wear it at the beach. Any beach. Or the hotel pool. My "home base" while shuttling in and out of Oahu was an apartment in a highrise overlooking Pearl Harbor, and I spent a lot of time swimming and laying out in my little black speedo at the complex's pool. Tried to visit it daily on days I couldn't get to the beach.
You'll definitely see other speedo wearers, but maybe not in huge numbers. Makes no difference, you'll be in paradise and there's no better place to relax in a speedo. I highly encourage renting a car. It's worth it for the freedom to go wherever and whenever you want and not have to mess around with public transit or tour busses.
Waikiki is the most famous destination, but if you can, definitely also hit up other beaches all around the island. The most popular snorkeling spot is Hanauma Bay, on the eastern end of Oahu. It gets crowded quickly and parking is scarce so go early in the day. There are beaches further up along that coast traveling "counter clockwise" around the edge of the island, such as Sandy Beach. But the water is very rough, so unless you are experienced, just lay out on those beaches and stay out of the surf. But then traveling further up along the northern "windward side" of the island, you start hitting some of the most gorgeous beaches, and the water is much more calm and looking behind you at the mountain vistas, these are some of the most amazing places to spend some quality speedo time at. Waimanalo, kailua, kaneohe, kaaava, kahuku... Just drive and stop where the beach calls out to you. Less crowded with tourists, quieter, spectacular.
The northwest coast is called the "north shore". This is where those crazy surfers ride those gigantic waves like Bonzai Pipeline, but that's only during the winter months. In the summer months, the water along this coast is calm, flat and perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Sunset beach, Waimea Bay, Haleiva, among others. My favorite snorkeling and freediving spot is "sharks cove", named that not because of actual sharks, but because there are fin-like rock formations under the water that resemble shark fins. Or so they say.
If you are feeling adventurous, travel along the lower southwestern "leeward" coast, stopping at the public beaches and man made coves of Koolina (if you can find parking), or just keep heading out past Waianae and go to a spot called Makaha. Another incredible beach to swim, snorkel and lay out in your speedo.
You are going to have an awesome time. I am soooo jealous!
