Do You Swim?
Out of curiousity, do you wear speedos because you find them attractive or do you actually swim too? Or both?
I used to swim hell of alot when I was younger, but stopped for some reason when I hit my mid teens (I became lazy, basically) but I still wore speedos whenever I went to the beach with my mates or lounging about at home and often underneath my uniform at school or whatever.
Now I've started swimming again regularly but I was just wondering if anyone else is at the stage where they wear speedos but don't actually swim? Just a curiousity question.
And for those who DO swim, do you have a certain swim plan/workout when you go in the water or do you just do a few laps and then leave? Just wondering as I like to follow a plan and I wanna know what plans you guys have if you do.

Re: Do You Swim?
i wear jammers to my local gym pool. I don't have a set swim style routine. I just swim for 15 minutes after i am done weight training. I like it a lot more than running on a treadmill.
Re: Do You Swim?
When I swam competitively in high school, we all wore jammers. I stopped swimming regularly during undergrad as I became totally lazy, but when I got back into it just over a year ago, swimming with briefs was the only way to go. Now I wear them everywhere.
I use swimplan.com - it's free and it generates full swim workouts for you based on the equipment you have, length of pool, and your level of fitness. I like using it as you can print out a new workout every day, so it really keeps up the variety and prevents you from doing the same thing every day.
Cheers

Re: Do You Swim?
Sometimes.... I wear them to the beach here. I wear them under board shorts, then ditch the shorts to go in the surf. There are expensive resort hotels at one end of the public beach where a few people from Europe wear speeds so I swim there.
I wore jammers when I did laps since that's what guys wear here in florida. The pools closed for the winter this year to save money so I havent done that in a while. A new public pool opened this week so I'm going to check it out.
When no ones around, I wear speeds around the house since Florida is warm to hot for most of the year. We keep the house at about 78F/26C. It's warmed up early this year. It will be about 82/28 outside today.
There's a web site called Total Immersion Swimming. I've bot some of their DVDs and use their drills for practice. It helps you focus on different skills. You can find some drills and info on the web site and blog. For comp swimming, they have info for tri athletes. But there's a lot of what's sort of like Zen/tai chi swimming where you focus on form and relaxation rather than speed. they call it Kaizen which I think means continous learning, or something like that. I've mentioned this before. It's still my favorite swimming site. Check it out.
I think they give Total Immersion classes in the U.K. now. The site will have that info. They have TI classes here in the winter at a big aquatic center about an hour from here.

Re: Do You Swim?
I never swam a whole lot growing up but wore speedos all the time.
Now days I swim at least 3 days a week and love it. Sometimes I'll wear jammers but 90% of the time I speedo it up.

Both, swim a few laps to remain healthy (except this winter) but now I'm waiting for the summer to go in full swing. ^_^
Re: Do You Swim?
Yes I swim & just found a new pool for only $2 a day or $3 on Saturdays.
I tried out a pair or "short jammers" last year & they were great!
They were made by speedo.
You get less stares when you wear jammers that is true & short jammers did not seem to bother anyone else at the pool.
I tried out a pair of endurance long leg jammers that come down to the knees but I don't really like them. Way to stretch & baggy.I think the size was one too large.I am lean & thin in the legs so they just didn't work out.
Also a pair of lycra form fiting jammers that were a great tight fit. Sometimes I wear a tight fitting racing suit under them & take the top jammers off after I swim the workout to get the feel of how fast I am after a workout in the pool. Ohter time s i take out the drag suit(it is reversible & slick on one side & drag holes on the other red side) & put it over jammers & also wear a vest for drag & a workout. My workouts are 200 yard warmup followed by about 3,200-4,000 yards & I like ascending drills followed by descending drills from 25 yards up to 500 yards with a repeat of the 500 yards & back down to 25 yards with maximum of 1 minute intervals rest inbetween. or just 30 secs rest & go!
As far a when I usually wear a speedo for any workout it just doesn't bother me much because I know I am there for the workout so who care's who's looking. I have a yellow swim cap with two lizard eyes on it just for laughs!
I also have a swim vest that is sleeveless & has drag holes for days when the pool is too cold. It's grey & is also great for the ocean swims. I was use to short suits that we called "shells" in the 60's that had snaps on them & were quick drying.
The only other suits that I liked for a tight fit were water polo suits. Most of the water polo suits are built tougher & have crazier designs. I have seen a few water polo suits that look like they are rubber type material & are the lenght of short jammers. I haven't been able to find them in a store but they showed up in some catalogue books in the past 5 years....basically I would like to get one of them. I think Arean made them & they looked sharp. I just can't find them in order books anymore.Any ideas on thsi let me know.

Re: Do You Swim?
I'm going to be the odd one out and say.... I can't even swim!
I just wear speedos because they're hot
If I'm in a pool or a spa or beach, I'll wear them in the water. But certainly no competitive or recreational laps for me!

Re: Do You Swim?
truWest has some rubber water polo suits but they're briefs. They stopped making the sold color and only make splices. They have wide sides and look a little weird. They also have some two inch side lycra water polo suits They sell mostly to teams but you can buy singles. Their euro cut speedos look cool. the solid color are okay. the prints look weird.swimracer wrote:The only other suits that I liked for a tight fit were water polo suits. Most of the water polo suits are built tougher & have crazier designs. I posted about Turbo water polo suits a few days ago. Fully lined and look like two inch sides. You can buy a few of them from Swim Outlet. They have way more at their web site. about US$40
You might like Asian jammers like Arena, Asics, or Mizumi. Much more form-fitting cut. Sizes run small and they are cut low. (I wear small size speedos and have to get a large in most Asian except Thailand) You can get Yingfa jammers on ebay. Made in China and way less expensive than Japan ones. A Japan Asian cut jammer will probably be about US$70 to 100. The cool graphic design styles are way more...up to US$150 and more. Must be for rich guys to show off at the pool. Not really designed for comp or laps. I don't like most US jammers except for Asian cut TYR. They ride too high and I don't like center seams.
Re: Do You Swim?
Used to swim in high school everyone wore speedos. Some briefs others square cuts. Then after 9th grade I was home schooled so I didn't really swim anymore (even though i have a pool). I still wear em though under clothes. Helps keep everything concealed if I should get excited or what not.

Re: Do You Swim?
Answer - both, though I don't do a lot of plain swimming these days.
Pretty much always wore speedos for any sort of swimming growing up. When I was in high school about half my mates wore speedos and half wore board shorts.
For a short while in my late teens I had some swimming shorts but didn't like them much, they felt uncomfortable to wear and were hopeless to swim in. I went back to speedos very quickly.
A uni mate of mine used to wear boardshorts but switched to speedos after a girlfriend mentioned to him that she thought I looked good in mine...he has worn them ever since too.
About the only time I wore shorts for swimming since then was when I was in the US with my family and we went to a Disney waterpark. Back here in Australia I'm happy to wear speedos though it is a shame to see far fewer guys wearing them these days, and some of the silly comments in the media.

Re: Do You Swim?
Always swim in speedos. 2x squad per week for an hour + whatever else is going on. I swim in swimming events and triathlons.
Re: Do You Swim?
I've been swimming 3-4x a week for the last 3 months. I'll swim about an hour, sometimes longer. And I wear my speedos to the pool although most times I'm the only one in speedos while the rest wear their jammers or shorts. I don't have the fittest body now but that doesn't stop me from wearing my speedos.
I do wear speedos under my pants too sometimes, especially when I already plan to go swim later in the day. Saves me the time to change..

Re: Do You Swim?
Swimming was purely recreational until I was about 24. When we moved back to Michigan, we ended up at a hotel that had a small gym and indoor pool. During our 3 years in Chicago, my activity level dropped to nearly nothing, plus my metabolism was starting to slow down from age. I used the weight machine and swam laps at least 4-5 times per week for 1.5 years. Then we joined the YMCA after bought a house.
Although I never did any real intense swimming (i.e. fast), it sure made a difference. I had the kick board and pull buoy that I used regularly. I have a clunky tendon on my left hip, and swimming seems to be the best thing for it. Now we rejoined the YMCA after about 6 years (started having kids) and I'm having to catch back up. I'm more focused on building mass this time around though, and the pool has been surprisingly (and consistently) busy at 6:30am. I haven't done any lap swimming at all yet. I keep hoping that the New Year's Resolutioners will thin out, or more people will move to running outside as it gets warmer out. I did thin out considerably after a recent marathon, but only to the point that people don't have to share lanes as much.
One thing I miss... the apartment pool saw very little use. I often swam in whatever I wanted, including Speedo thongs and some smaller than that - Can't get away with that at the YMCA.

Re: Do You Swim?
[I did 800+ yards in my black speedo in sets of 100 yards.
Had to put on a sleeveless drag vest to stay warm cause the pool was chilly.+ some racing double seal goggles.
Had a laytex yellow cap on with lizard red eyes on the forhead! HA!

Re: Do You Swim?
I've never been much of a swimmer, and don't swim at the moment, but I've decided I'm going to swim at gym out of interest and for fitness reasons. Plus, it's yet another excuse to wear a speedo in public...always a winner
