Speedos in Brazil

Hi everyone,

I spent 31 days in Brazil and I was very happy to wear speedos. I wasn't in Rio de Janeiro though. I spent time at a hot springs resort in Caldas Novas, a few hundred km's from the capital Brasília, Bertioga, Sahy and Praia Grande all near the city of São Paulo.
While in Bertioga I wore my aussiebum league swim wear under my adidas swim shorts. At the beach (Bertioga) my friends told me it was ok to wear them. He added, "you're in Brazil, remember?" I was surprised to see my friend wear his sunga because he's always wearing jeans or boardshorts up to his knees. I was surprised to see him in a sunga also because he had nice legs. Bertioga is like a private club with its private beach and pools. At the swimming pools the lifeguards wore SPEEDOS (red). It was nice to see them, especially since they were hard most of the time. In Bertioga most of the guys wore speedos/sungas. Every kid/todler wore speedos. There was one guy in the change room who was semi-hard

when he put on his sunga (very tempting). Later on that same day I wore a sunga (green) that I purchased in Brazil. It was so nice and I felt very comfortable, expecially since i got a great tan that day. At the other 2 beaches I wore my adidas swim briefs that I purchased in Brazil. I was happy because I was able to get a nice tan again. But this time, there weren't many in speedos, mostly kids/todlers in them. I liked seeing parents encouraging their little ones to wear speedos. I just didn't understand why the fathers weren't in sungas/swim briefs. Many of them looked alright, so I didn't understand why. At the hot springs resort, One of my buddies wore an adidas squarecut. I simply wore a speedo swim brief and my excuse was to get a nice tan. No one gave me any dirty looks, but I did have looks of admiration from both sexes.

It was sad not to see more speedos. Even the shorts you buy at the store are up to the knee

. Sungas/swim briefs should be worne more often. I did find out that some private beach clubs don't allow boatrdshorts at the pool. If you have a nice body and look good in a speedo/sunga than just wear it. That's all I can say.

Thanks for posting about the trip. It sounds like speedos were most common in Bertioga? And not as common elsewhere?

It was interesting to read about the friend you wrote about in Bertioga - too bad he usually wears shorts (but I guess you mean when he is not in Brazil).

I was surprised to read you felt you needed to give buddies an excuse to wear speedos at the hot spring resort, as I thought most guys wore speedos in Brazil.

I liked reading about the lifeguards and wish I could see them

Yes, Bertioga speedos seemed to be more common. But my friend lives in Brazil. That's why I was surprised to never see him in a sunga. He wears mostly jeans and boardshorts. Sorry for the misunderstanding. At the hot springs resort it was a 50-50 mix, so I figured it would be a good idea to simply say why I wanted to wear the speedos. I saw a slight surprised look since they knew I was from Canada and that speedos weren't very common. I missed seeing the lifeguards.

I lived in Brazil for nearly a decade, and my impression was that what we call square-cut speedos were mostly worn on the beaches in Rio - what they call 'sunga' or even 'sungao'. The briefer cuts were considered a bit too 'gay' for regular use - pity!
By the way, anyone know anything about the Brazilian-made Tulio label, which is distributed in the US I think, but not widely available in Brazil itself. Perhaps they too are considered to be 'too gay'.

Swim briefs, speedos, whatever you want to call them, what are the criteria in your opinion for a guy to wear them. MAYBE at the beach, but mainly if you went to like a pool. Like at a hotel, public, etc.

I have a speedo from Swim Team and was thinking about using it in other places because I just cant go back to board shorts. The board shorts feel too funny and baggy for me. I know that Ill probably wear like short swim trunks for the beach so as to not be too revealing, but what about like at a pool or something?

I spent my honeymoon in Rio last December and wore my speedos all day every day. I wore 2" sides navy blue/white stripe by adidas, bright blue nike, some blue/white stripe ones and my favourites a vintage 80s pair in red with some stripe/flashes and long white tie-strings..a bit tacky but for me that is very sexy! It was absolute bliss to be able to wear them and not feel in the least bit judged or different. Nearly every guy in Rio wore sungas (even walking the streets!) and it was impossible to find speedo briefs to buy in the shops.
