Speedos vs. Jammers - shed some light

Post by briwin » Fri Jul 24, 2009 8:18 am

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on a myth that I've
been told..

Someone told me that the more coverage you're wearing makes you go
faster, ie jammers, legskins, fastskins...

I also heard that it actually doesn't work...
(the story behind that):
You get guys that are in high school that are told that they have to
wear tight clothing to reduce drag... here's your speedo... then they
say
"I would rather quit the team than be caught swimming in my
underwear".
So they made a compromise, and thus the Jammer is born, and it became
second-best to the tradional swim brief.

I've also heard stories that "the coach says we're pussies if we
insist on wearing jammers.

So I ask coaches [and swimmers], how does wearing a jammer make one a
pussy?

Thank you for helping confirm or bust a myth

Nobody at school wore jammers. it was always the schools speedo uniform for swimming or boardies for playing around

The swim team I was on in high school had Jammers as the team suit. During serious matches some of us wore full body suit or leg skins. We wore board shorts with Speedos underneath some of the time during practice because of the massive increase in drag  Only the Dive team wore only speedos

I hate to say this but I dont know if it just my generation, swimmers in this area, the fact you are not 95% nude in you swimsuit, or Mr. Phelps but there a lot more guys are joining swim teams. I think for some people the added coverage provided by Jammers makes them fell a lot more secure.

IMO speedos give you a lot more fell of the water and get rid of the weird tan lines jammers give you.

We all need to remember full body suits have been around for 10 years now and every swim record there is was made if a full body suit.

My coaches never said anything about swimsuits unless they were the wrong color.

From day one we started out in Jammers and they were what the swim team required materials list said to buy. :x

In Florida the swim teams pretty much wear jammers except for like you say the dive team. Floridas real conservative. Old pics posted here of teams in Florida fromthe seventies show people wearing speedos. It was pretty amazing then.

I posted here about how full body tech suits will be banned by FINA next year. One article said that they would define the max suit coverage as a jammer. Hard to believe they actually did that. You might see the breaststrokers wear speedos since that stroke you have to swing your legs out more to the side.

I wear speedos under my board shorts to the beach and just ditch the boardies to go swimming. I feel kinda pumped and confident getting out of the water and I don't care what people think about my speedos.

well....i just graduated this year...was on the high school swimming/diving team for four years....it really varied, but most guys would get jammers, apparently because: "that's sooo embarassing! why would i want to wear that?" now i dont see a problem with jammers...i used to wear them myself...but i will say that speedos have a lot more advantages...jammers make your thighs itch a lot, and plus speedos just give you a confidence that you can't really get from much else....idk that's what i think...but i'd definitely prefer speedos 8)

Hey speeder! Me 2. I've been swimming as much as I can in the ocean before I leave to check out the norheast (where its freakin cold in the ocean). My freestyle is stronger now and I feel more confident and streamlined in speedos. My regular speedo brand lycra jammers do itch a little. The chinese ones with the tech fabric dont itch... ride low and they shed water like crazy. I'll post a pic of them. Not bad for 30 bucks... I really would like a pair of Japanese Mizumos. Man they are fantastic. 80 bucks plus shipping.

Most of the divers at the aquatic center here wear speedos but they usually double up on them for practice anyway. Maybe its so they dont feel so embarased about their bulge or something.

Oh and did I mention your avatar rocks???

Jammers are only popular with swim teams because the cut and design of them is more conservative: less bulge, more coverage. Sprint records can be made in any suit. The key is just being in the one that you personally prefer. There is a lot of "psychological" aid that technical/full body suits give to swimmers as well. Sometimes, just THINKING a suit makes you swim faster allows you to improve your time.
