Frustrated and Upset

I've been going to Hawaii since the mid 70's and would agree that there were more speedos in the early days.
As I've mentioned in other posts, in the last couple of years, I've seen a few others in speedos, so that I wasn't the only lone soldier... but they are few and far between!
I've also had some "side eye", but I just ignore it and enjoy myself... sunning, swimming, snorkeling in my speedo!
I've already booked 3 weeks on Maui next winter and can't wait to hit the beach in my speedo!

My wife and I went to Maui a couple of years ago- at the Marriott in the Kaanapali area- and one of the afternoon she stayed by the pool and I went for a walk. I went all the way up to Black Rock Beach and turned around. On the way back, I shucked my shorts and walked the rest of the way to the Hyatt Regency (maybe a mile?) in just speedos. I was the only guy I saw in them, but man, did it feel great. It was so liberating.

Can't wait to go back!

We stay in the North Kaanapali area (other side of Black Rock), but often in the area where you were staying.
Like I've said, even though I might be the only one in a speedo, but I still enjoy my speedo time in one of my favorite places.... Although I do have to say, that when I'm on a European beach, I feel more accepted or not being judged.

Oh don't worry, I didn't even bring shorts lol. I was in speedo everywhere in that resort and beach. I was just surprised how unfriendly it was. Nevertheless, it was generally a progressive crowd, so I didn't mind too much.

Hi there, this is my first post on here so here we go. I live in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, This is a huge party town that everyone comes to in the summer months to show off their boats and their bodies. I personally wear a speedo\brief all the time, my wife approves. But I have the same issues, I get stares, finger pointing but a lot of thumbs up. Going through the channel here where the London Bridge is this past weekend, there were hundreds of boats parked and thousands of people. There were a lot of large women in thongs and pasties(nipple covers) that should have had more covered but I didn't see one guy in speedos. What's the hang up with speedos.

Now, I’m not a sociologist but I do have a theory on why so many men are reluctant to wear something other than huge ugly board shorts (Victorian bathing costume). There’s the societal stigma attached to speedo wearing “only pervs wear speedos” etc. Secondly, there’s an ageist/sizeist element to it, ie “it’s always fat old guys wo wear speedos.” This cultural conditioning has influenced many people into accepting these as facts rather than opinions. After all, nobody wants to be viewed as seemingly socially inadequate.

Also, porn has negatively conditioned men into thinking that a large penis is very important. Wearing a speedo is basically a way of advertising penis size. While it’s true that some women like a large penis, it’s also true that some women like hairy men, or hairless men, or men with pretty hands, men who aren’t total bastards etc.

What’s more. And I don’t want to come across as arrogant, or patting myself on the back. But. I’m still fairly young (37), successful with a PhD, attractive though there’s plenty of guys more handsome than me and in better shape. Also I’ve got a penis on the small side of average. If speedos are to become more acceptable there need to be more guys like me who are comfortable wearing them.

I think there’s a problem with extreme modesty for men in America. Guys that won’t even slow themselves to be seen naked in the locker room, guys who won’t wear tank tops at the gym and wear t shirts instead. Mothers who make their boys wear shirts in the pool, even indoors. For some reason it’s acceptable for women to wear almost nothing but men have to keep themselves covered at all cost.

I noticed recently at my athletic club a group of young children, around age 5, taking swim lessons. Of the eight boys there five were wearing shirts. Some long sleeve. This was indoors so sun exposure was not an issue. Mothers are raising their sons to be insecure about exposing any part of themselves. It used to be common to see little boys running around in speedos at the pool.

BJE, that is one of the things I don’t understand either. When I swim at an indoor natatorium close to my house, I’ve seen the same thing.
For outdoors, I understand people’s concerns to sun exposure, especially for fair skinned individuals.
However the crazy thing is, indoors and outdoors you’ll see families with a daughter wearing a two piece swimsuit and then their son with long shorts and a long sleeve sun shirt. If sun exposure was a concern, why would you not put your daughters in the same type of shirt..?
Unfortunately the US has made the male body a taboo.

I’d say that at my gym 90% of the women and 10% of men wear tank tops. Seems weird that men are afraid to show their shoulders. I’d go shirtless at the gym if it was allowed.

Same here at my gym, it’s strange as a lot of the guys obviously have a great physique yet cover up so much. I only ever wear tank tops and singlets at the gym as sleeves feel too restrictive.

Definitely! Also I find it makes me work much harder in the gym when there’s guys with better physiques around. Not the huge steroid guys but the regular guys with nice musculature.

Unfortunately it is even worse than that.

These days men can not be courteous to women without getting accused of "flirting".

Boys are not allowed to be loud and rambunctious... not allowed to play outside... not allowed to get dirty... build forts, explore in the woods... Instead kids are medicated into a coma so they can be "well behaved".

With all of this behavior modification, we see the fall of the masculine American male.

I don't understand why all the kids these days are a bunch of "momma's boys" while those same mommas love to see masculine men in movies and the like. Even TV shows are all about emasculating the male characters. "Modern Family" is the worst, I just can't watch it.

To be fair, there are a lot of boys growing up out there who simply do not have good male role models.

I'll stop before I really go off the deep end, but I strongly feel that this is one core value that has been lost between the "Greatest Generation" and today. Men are not allowed to be Men, and boys are brought up to be girls.

There are SO many disgusting obese people here, and I’m frustrated by the fact that it’s perfectly socially acceptable for a very fat person to wear a bikini (in the case of a woman) or no shirt (men) and display their hideous giggling bellies and yet if someone who tries to stay fit wears a speedo to the beach they’re a pariah.

I asked my wife if she would be ok with me sunning myself in a speedo and she said, “are you crazy? Have you seen literally one other person in one?”

It does make a difference when your spouse has reservations. Still, with your fit body, you shouldn't have any reservations. You're wearing your speedo because you're a swimmer.

I was at a conference of an industry association (garden communicators) in Salt Lake City, Utah last weekend. The Sheraton's hotel pool was larger than most hotels have, so it was actually possible to swim the length without having to turn around too often.

A Canadian male friend and I both swam one afternoon, he in a black square cut and me in an Andrew Christian brief (the most conservative suit I own). There were families with children, and none of the other men at the pool had brief suits. Ken and I are both 65 or older. No one commented.

The second day I swam, several of my female colleagues were also in the pool. I swam a few lengths with a friend who makes a habit of swimming across the Hudson each year (she lives near that Eastern river) and afterward stood around in the pool talking with friends. Again, no comments about my swimsuit.

I find that no one cares what I wear to swim. I wouldn't wear a thong in a hotel pool, but a regular swim brief is perfectly normal and acceptable whether I'm the only man wearing one or not. Wear what you want, with confidence.

I was at the Salt Lake City Sheraton in June. I wore a speedo at the pool but couldn’t slim laps because it was crowded with children.
