Costa Rica Speedo friendly destination

Hello guys,

I've been asked about my country and the speedo scene here, hope you find this information useful.

Costa Rica is a tropical country, where there are two seasons: the dry and the rainy, but the temperatures remain unchanged. You have beaches, hot springs, rivers, pools and indoor spas where you can use your bathing suit.

Society, as everywhere, is a follower of fashion, and many situations change over time, however it is a little more open to live and let live so if someone wants to take their speedos to the beach, pool or river, that guy won't be judged or appointed. So, consider Costa Rica as speedo friendly country.

Growing during the 90s, there was no resort industry like it does now. We have a lot of virgin beaches, it was common to stay in a cabin lent to your parents, a friend's house or if you were lucky a relative live on the coast. Since I can remember, my father, my older brother and I used swim briefs for almost all our vacations.

My dad loved to run off to the beach to hang a hammock between 2 palms, drink whiskeys, and stay all day in his speedos. Well, a local clothing brand, the word speedo came with globalization, I guess, in spanish we call them "tanga". For my brother and I, there was no big difference, we played at the beach or at a pool without any malice, without being aware that we were almost naked and for the heat, swimbriefs were the best. I remember how cool we felt when we took to the beach our team costumes, they were from the sports academy where we trained in San Jose.

My cousins, uncles and everyone I knew in my environment, used them with all naturalness. A lot of times, my sister's boyfriend (both of them were 10 years older than us), on his twenties, dressed speedos as well. I couldn't imagine wearing another option for bathing suit. In fact, if for any reason you didn't have a swim suit with you but there was a chance to get wet, your underwear (normally briefs) turned into an excellent bathing suit.

Of course, everything comes to an end, being a senior at high school, for the year-end trip, we were told to bring our swim suits, innocently I packed my swimbriefs, in my mind, the team costume was a very cool idea, as I could impress everyone by letting them know I trained in an academy. I never imagined that those who wore speedos and came out of the dressing room first were going to be mocked by those who wore board shorts. Stupidly, I decided to stay out of the pool and excused myself with the teacher saying I had a stomach ache.

Later that day, when my parents asked me why I didn't go into the pool, they didn't believe the stomach ache story, so I had to confessed what happened and my father gave me the speech that I shouldn't care what people said or thought of me and that if they were not brave enough to use their speedos, it was their problem and not mine. Even though, I did't go back to speedos in public, maybe a couple of times more with my family until the trip I shared in the Speedo Stories.

Now, how is the speedo scene in Costa Rica? Well, speedos are accepted, maybe not as cultural like in Brazil or easy-to-see like in Italy, but you can find a lot of them on Instagram. Trust me, you won't feel alone at the beach and as I said, no one will judge you. Wearers come from all type of guys: seniors, straight, gay, young, models, fat, skinny, swimmers, athletes, soccer players, even social network "influencers" and showbiz-related are posting more and more pictures enjoying their fabulous life while wearing speedos.

Even Burger King launched this year a summer campaign with a happy and healthy couple that are wearing a skimpy bikini and speedo. Reading comments in social media, no one addressed the speedos or appointed them as disgusting, in the other hand, people said how fast food was the last thing needed to have the fit bodies of the pictures.

Hi kolver!

Where are the best beaches to visit? East coast? West coast?

Any resorts that are particularly great?

How would it be to get around for someone who speaks primarily English and very little Spanish?

I'm thinking it might be fun to take a trip down there sometime and am just looking for a heads up on where I should be planning to visit.

Hmm. Interesting. I didn’t see many speedos when I went to C.R. But there’s such a chilled out feel to the country that perhaps no one cares. By the way I absolutely love your country!

Also, I think it’s been 15 years since I had Burger King or McDonald’s. Not just for health reasons, I love food. But because of my French snobbery about what I consider “food.” B.K. And McDo are definitely not “food!”
Buttoned up college professor by day, happy freak at heart! There will be nudity. I’m French and American. Sometimes the flag is one country’s, sometimes the other’s.. Oh!
