Teenage boys are at interesting age in male development. They are still negotiating where they fit in regards to masculinity, sexual orientation, gender identity etc. Often they engage in culturally stereotypical male behaviour like making negative comments about a gay/guy in speedos, or assuming any male wearing speedos is gay.
It helps them in their mind, fit into a defined category for example white, straight, male.

But if one of their mates who they regarded as being "definitely straight" started wearing speedos - seriously, or more likely ironically, or as a joke - I'm sure they wouldn't be far behind in wearing them as well. Sort of a "we're the lads and we're being funny and confident wearing speedos."

Teenagers are a strange creature.
You have a good point. But also at that age they are taking notice of what other people are saying and what fashion labels are saying is correct attire for swimming or on the beach.
Love speedos, running shorts, rugby shorts, Aussie rules footy shorts.

I have to agree with so much of this.

I just wish there were less of a "that's GAY" stigma attached to minimal swimwear styles.

So the guy is wearing a swim brief (or less)... so what.

Have you ever worn one to the beach? They sure are comfortable! (I know you guys on this forum do! This is more a question to poise to people freaking out over a guy wearing a swim brief.)

It sure is nice to be able to swim without my swim suit trying to drown me! LoL!!!

MrMusik, you're spot on. I made the mistake of wearing to the beach once last year more than swim briefs. Guess I hadn't realized how little sand I end up accumulating when wearing my minimal swim briefs. Wow, the sand was horribly uncomfortable, and there was a lot of it.

So yeah, your question to any non-brief wearer, "Have you ever worn one to the beach," is valid, as is the point of wearing trunks that won't try to drown the wearer.

I always wear speedo and a shorter pair of swim shorts over them. I think if I had a friend/s who were wearing one too I would wear one with my shorts.

You can wear your speedo alone, without the covering shorts, when we go to the beach together Speedoaddict!

I'll definitely be there for moral support! I may not wear my smallest suit, but whatever I wear will probably be smaller than a speedo! 8) :P

I second that, MrMusik. I'd accompany Speedoaddict poolside or to the beach, no shorts required!

I meant no shorts with a friend or friends. But I will keep your offers in mind.

We tend to fear what we don't understand. That applies to a lot of things in life, not just Speedo wearing. And rather than walking up to you and asking, most people will make up some reason to rationalize it, in their mind. That's a reason we have things like religion, racism, and homophobia. We need an explanation for something we wouldn't do or don't understand to be able to sleep at night. Simply talking to people who are different than you can go a very long way to acceptance.

But I can appreciate the OP. Having nipple rings, and practicing yoga (apparently) also makes you gay. The women I've been with who saw past that would definitely disagree. 8)

_su_, right you are; simply talking with someone apparently different tends to dissolve the anonymity barrier and thereby the prejudice or the desire to label/judge.

When the nephew and I've been to the beach, invariably he befriends nearby kids so it's natural for any accompanying adult (usually the mother) and I to talk. My wearing skimpy briefs hasn't mattered once.

Glad to hear it. Underwear in the pool is a bit yucky. Well, if you're been wearing them all day anyway ...

I spent Xmas on the Victorian, Aus, coast and went to the beach several times. Xmas eve morning was nearly all families with small kids swimming and checking out the rock pools. I'd say 75% of the dads were wearing speedos. Most of them fit, and aged between 30 and 40.
The numbers might be skewed as there is a big ocean swim/fitness culture down there but still it was a lot of speedos. Unfortunately I didn't have any with me which was disappointing.

Look at platform and springboard diving.
Speedos worn by male athletes and not a word from people saying they are gay.
Yet you look at other sports like Rugby, Cliff Diving, Aussie Rules Football, and NFL. Speedos worn for cliff diving by the men, Rugby and AFL shorts are tiny nothing said, NFL I am sorry if I upset anyone but the trousers they wear are tight and femanine looking.
But the reason speedos are thought of as gay is the way some fashion companies have marketed them towards gay men.

I’ve noticed the gay association that speedos have. I think it’s silly, but it doesn’t bother me one bit. I’ve had people assume I’m gay since high school even though I have no sexual interest in men whatsoever. I’m not gay, so why should I care if some insecure guy thinks I am? Some people call things “gay” as an insult, which I also find stupid. Why should I be insulted? It’s not a bad thing, so once again, I don’t care what some fool thinks.

Also. I prefer swim briefs because I don’t like the way I look in square cut, and would rather not have to swim in the excessive fabric of swim shorts.
