Skype is good. Nobody to really censor anything or report pics or other things. The next best thing to actually being in person with someone.

Skyping is brilliant - when you think about it you can talk too and see each other live, better than any long distnace phone call, and completely free. How is Grinder or Snapchat better - unless all you can manage is a half-line sentence?

There was a drama on BBC Iplayer a month or so back called "The Man In the Orange Shirt" - in two parts - the second part (which I managed to find on dailymotion for download) shows the story of a young guy addicted to Grinder/Scruff (app in the darma is called Gruff!). Sucessful young professional with a completely disfunctional personal life that leads him to dispair. It's depressing to think that this is the reality of gay life these days - most guys can't even manage a chat up line, just one word. Talk about shallow - how about no depth at all, not even the thinnest veneer.
