Swimwear going expensive in general?

Post by timinauckland » Tue May 24, 2016 2:55 am

Aussiebum latest Luxe series: one pair costs USD$98.50 ? A pair of Emporio Armani Olympic Swim Brief costs USD$95? WTH? Most swimwear of other brands with decent design seem to cost >=USD$60 too. They are effectively more expensive for people like us whose currencies are a lot weaker than USD$

I might have to consider mortgaging my butt to be able to afford more pairs

Out of my league, but still plenty of suits available on ebay for reasonable price or from Asia for a few quid.

Mr Turk / Trina Turk makes knitted suits similar AB's woven luxe fabrics. I have 3 suits by Mr Turk. The woven fabric has a very different feel compared to Lycra when wearing them. It's hard to describe but it fits more like a sweater with some stretch as opposed to compression like Lycra. It does a great job holding things in place while giving some stretch. The fabric is thicker so it evens out the shape and I think make it more flattering. I know, it's an odd way to describe them but that is about the best I can say....

I am a big fan of knitted suits and they are at the top of my list when am not working out. I've mentioned this before that I prefer to wear what folks here refer to as "fashion" suits to the beach, vacationing or hanging out by the pool. I swim 4-5 days a week and I am always in my Turbos. I look at my Turbo suits as gym clothing and I pretty much don't wear gym clothing anywhere else but to the gym.....

AB Luxe might be one to watch for the infamous AB sales.... keep the forum posted if anyone gets a pair or for that matter, other similar knitted suits.

I've noticed the rising prices too. But I thought it was just me, being cheap.

Maybe it's a good trend. When swimmers become a conspicuous luxury item, the uppity masses will snap them up, trying to look like wealthy pseudo-celebrities. It'll be the new must-have, and board shorts will die.

They don't ship to New Zealand.

This website looks awesome. Again prices are not very cheap. New Zealand dollar lost 33% value against greenback since its peak 2 years ago, which means everything now is 1.5 times more expensive.

In saying that, I don't swim as much now. More of a gym person. I will subscribe to their newsletters and watch out for sales.

Thank you both for your advice. :P

Agreed. Anything that gets popular usually gets more expensive. Expensive designer speedos are a great sign that maybe smaller suits in general are coming back. As described here-in, there are lots of more reasonably priced options.
