True. And that's part of the excitement in wearing them. The only time it's a problem is between the locker room and the pool, or vice versa.[/quote]

I agree with this statement, I find the walk from the locker room and showers tough. The pool where I swim is great, the pool is right outside the change room. When I open the door I have maybe 3 strides and I am at the edge of the pool. Very little time for anyone to see. I don't find getting out to be much trouble, I am usually so exhausted from the swim that my mind not thinking about what others may think.

I just don't get what the problem is. I wear a brief in any pool I go to. If I'm going to be on deck a lot I have my gym shorts and a tee shirt to wear over the swimsuit, but they come right off and in the pool I go. I want to be seen in my speedo, I don't take any stares as being offensive or negative. Nobody has ever made a comment or commotion about it. I'm a swimmer, I'm in good shape, I wear the appropriate attire.

Hey BriefsBro,I hope you feel encouraged, and not pressured, by the many voices here saying "go for it." We all need to feel our way into increasing boldness at our own pace. In my case, I wanted to start lap swimmming in briefs about three years ago, but was intimidated by being at a suburban gym pool with crowds of families on the pool deck in the summer. For a couple years I "compromised" by wearing shorts over my briefs from home all the way to the edge of the pool, and then after swimming drying a bit and putting the shorts back on for my exit. By dressing and showering at home I could skip the locker room and the long walk from there to the pool. I was a little more brave on vacation with my wife in tropical places. Even though there were rarely others in speedos, somehow I felt being with her made it more okay to sun or swim in mine (but of course when walking from place to place, the shorts went on over).

Even though it has taken a long time, something has finally shifted in my thinking or feeling. This fall, I finally started using the gym locker room to change, and made myself walk boldly down the hall to the pool deck carrying just my towel and goggles. After a month or two, it is feeling pretty natural (but we'll see what happens next summer when the families and kids are out again in great numbers). I have even been bold to go into the co-ed sauna after swimming (the cold air outside makes that really attractive). It seems so crazy to be in the sauna with the many people who for some reason like to be fully clothed in their exercise shirts and shorts. But so far no one has commented or made faces at me in my little Sporti Euro brief. And something wonderful has happened when I am at the beach. I have stopped even trying to count whether other guys are in speedos. I just assume I will be the only one, and it's okay. This fall I was at a crowded San Diego beach on a warm weekend. I very quickly removed my shorts and spent the whole afternoon just in my Sporti. In and out of the water, long walks along the shore, even the trips to the restroom and drinking fountain across the boardwalk from beach. Again, no one seemed to care, and for the most part I stopped being conscious of wearing something unusual. But it sure felt great!

Now I have a new dilemma. The recent posts about skimpy suits available on Amazon inspired me to go shopping. (I'll post pictures in the Photos area.) I'd probably wear them at the beach, but would I really use them for lap swimming at my local family gym? ... So the speedo adventure continues for me, and I wish you all the best as you take the steps that feel right for you. How's it going?

I went swimming last night a bit later than I usually do. I was wearing a Speedo, walked from the locker room to the pool, and totally forgot about high school swim practice. Oh well, too late now. I walked over to the open lanes past the kids waiting to get in the water. They ignored me. One nice thing, one of the female coaches was sitting on a bench doing some paperwork on her clipboard. When I got near her, I saw her raise her head and check me out. She smiled, I smiled, and we went on our way.

When I read some of the experiences from those of you in countries like the states, I wish I could transport you here to Aus to see some of the things I see, especially lately.

I've spotted groups of young guys water skiing in speedos on the river, a bucks party at the beach where the whole group was wearing speedos, and a group paddling inflatable boats around houseboats at the lake - all in speedos.

I'm sure a lot of these guys are wearing them ironically, but there seem to be a lot of young guys getting around in speedos - even if it's just for a joke.

I hope brands like budgy smuggler etc keep pushing silly designs for people to wear, so more and more people who wouldn't wear speedos might just pop them on for a fun occasion or more regular use...

What is it with AU and how casual they are about speedos? Is it just a culture thing and how they grew up and it stuck? How do guys generally feel about it?

I know here the only guys that would be more likely to wear them are gay guys, but because it's an opportunity to show off or feel good wearing something skimpy. I really wish everyone had that same Australian pride in wearing swim briefs over at the States.

Yesterday I went to Big-5 sporting goods here in California to buy new shoes. While there I headed over to the water sports section and was happy to see plenty of speedo briefs hanging for sale, even though it's out of season. Several from Nike as well as Speedo. None with side measurements less than 2" but still they looked so good and felt so nice and new. It was very encouraging to see them.
