Ban Shorts at the Beach

A friend of mine is in South Beach and this is what her son is wearing at the beach. It's ridiculous.

The guys in the background aren't much better. Makes me sad.

One of the guys in the background looks to be wearing jammers under his shorts. Sigh, so close but yet so far.

I was in South Beach a couple of weeks ago I noticed this as well. What was interesting to see was some guys take off the cargo shorts and have board shorts on underneath. But thats not all!!! Some still had underwear on under the board shorts. Three layers of clothing walking around in steamy Florida. UGH!!!

Ban Shorts at the Beach

Did you ask him why he didn't bring his swimsuit? I agree this is just ridiculous. However here in California the new trend is shorter mid thigh shorts. So swimsuits on guys are getting shorter. I also think guys find it practical to wear shorts to the beach so they don't have to change when walking around town. I wish speedos were just as acceptable around the beach town like shorts are.

I agree the look of cargo shorts is ridiculous while lying on the beach. Worse yet if a dude were to go swimming in them, how stupid is that?

But completely impractical as far as using them as swimwear. Or even tan-wear. How difficult is it to peel off a pair of shorts when stepping onto the sand, and then pulling them back on again when going into town? If this is happening with guys on the beach a lot, then again, I think this is yet another example of adhering to a fashion trend, no matter how stupid and ridiculous it is, rather than a response to "practicality".

I understand your feeling about this, but I come at it from a different angle. I totally LOVE wearing a pair of cargo shorts around town, and having a speedo on underneath, and only I know I have it on, and I find it fun and empowering. Then, I love to hit the beach and pull off those cargo shorts and reveal my speedo, while feeling that sudden rush of freedom and confidence that comes from wearing one. And this works best when it's a pair of cargo shorts, not swim trunks or board shorts (swim trousers), because trunks and swim trousers are legitimate (although not preferred) swimwear, where cargo shorts are definitely not. So you hit the sand and you give off the impression that you're not really serious about going for a swim because you're not wearing a proper swimsuit, and you peel off those shorts, and indeed yes, you are wearing a swimsuit after all, ready to stroll down to the water and dive in. Can't over describe how great that transition from street to beach feels.

sometimes a carry a speedo in the cargo pocket of my shorts or carry a speedo in my bag if i think there's even the slightest chance of being around some sand or water

always important to be prepared
