Non-speedo talk: Waterproof MP3 Players

Post by Nate » Fri Mar 14, 2014 5:44 am

This thread has nothing really to do with speedos, but is sort of on topic as it's about swimming, the pool and fitness that I know leads to a nice wet pair of speedos - so hope this is ok ;)

I've started to swim much longer distances lately, not only as I'm training for a Swimathon (5km) but the idea of endurance and 'marathon swimming' has fascinated me. If people can run for miles and miles on end - what's stopping us from swimming miles and miles on end?

One answer to that question might just be this - 'boredom'.

So I was browsing the internet one day, as you do, and I came across this great advertisement https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsnuyWXVxjE and I was completely sold. It's not as chunky as the Speedo Aquabeat and other waterproof MP3's on the market, and the commercial is the coolest thing ever. Not long after watching that advert I noticed a woman in the pool wearing one of these and when she finished I quizzed her on how the product is - and she gave a glowing review.

So I've bought one from Amazon for £49 and it's due tomorrow, so I need your tips on what music I should listen to when I'm doing my lengths? And does anyone else swim to music? If so - what music and what MP3 player do you use?

Wow that's pretty cool Nate. They should made these years ago n I think is a great concept for swimmers. When you try them out let me know how they are.

I used to have a waterproof case/earbuds for my iPod shuffle and I would listen to podcasts while swimming my laps. Unfortunately that product wasn't the best and eventually leaked water into the iPod, killing it.

When I would listen to music, I found that the different tempos didn't affect me so I just listened to what I would normally listen to outside of the pool.

I've seen this commercial too and it's something that I definitely want to get so that I can listen to music again in the pool

Thanks for bringing this forward Nate, I'm going to research on getting one too. Please write a review when you have tried your out.

If the fit is comfortable, could be good for running or cycling if caught in the rain. Another thought, wearing while skiing.
Let's keep it brief.

Ooooooooh, I had my credit card out of my wallet and sweating in fear until I read:

"Do NOT use in salt water/ocean."

OK, so I've had them for about a week now - and to be honest, I'm not getting along with them at all.

They're easy to put music on, they look great but practically for a front-crawl swimmer - they're a bit naff.

My very first swim I popped them on my head, ducked under the water, kicked off from the wall and they shot out of my ears. Nightmare. Water got inside the buds and they started to muffle, I had no time to dry them off (this fixes the muffling, it's in the instructions) so I swam without them.

The next swim I managed to attach them to my goggles hoping this would help. I kicked off and it certainly stayed in my ears, however, as I swam my bicep would keep hitting the earphones in my ears and knocking them out of place, it was pretty uncomfortable.

The lady at my pool wears them to do breastroke - so I can see why they're ideal for her - but for a front crawl swimmer they don't quite work - they need to be smaller at the ears or you're going to have to adjust your stroke a bit.

It's a shame really, I made a great playlist and discovered music on my laptop I hadn't heard in years, so I wear them in the shower now to get the use out of them haha
