Taking the Plunge

Post by c3dexter » Mon Oct 08, 2012 11:32 pm

So I've always wanted to be brave and bare it all in a speedo but can't get the courage to go for it. How do I get over it?

Put one on, and wear it to the beach or pool. That simple.

Start small. Wear it under your shorts when you go swim. When you get more comfortable, take off your shorts right before getting in the water. Then you'll soon find them unnecessary altogether.

...or join a swim team

Start with Jammers they are a good transition piece. There 1/2 board shorts 1/2 speedo. Once you get comfortable in Jammers you will just start wanting to wear speedo. This might sound weird but its how i got back into Speedos.

Just wear it. What is the problem? It is just a swim suit. If it going to give you such trepidation, you really should stick to being a closet speedo lover and wear it at home or under your shorts where no one can see you.

well here is the thing. I volunteered myself for the halloween carnival dunk tank and I think its the perfect excuse to come out wearing a speedo

Hey there,

When I go to a new pool I'll often wear a jammer over my speedos the first couple of times. Just until I feel comfortable.

It is easy to have a jammer on and just pull it down when you get that burst of courage.

I've recently discovered Bikram yoga and have been going regularly. When I first started I wore square cuts just to be on the safe side, and now I do every session just in speedos. It's the most amazing feeling, you've just got take the plunge when the time is right. You won't regret it!

Keep in mind that if you are in a Speedo, the subliminal message is that you're there to swim.

If you are in baggy shorts or jams or something other than a suit made for swimming, you're an amateur.

A Speedo is what swimmers wear, not shorts.

I remember being very nervous about wearing my speedo to the gym pool. It took me a long time to get the confidence I have now. I started just wearing the speedo under my boardshorts and didnt change at the locker room. I would remove my board shorts when I knew there wasnt anyone around at the pool and would jump in with the speedo... Then I started changing at the gym in my Speedo but still wearin the shorts out to the pool... Then I just started changing into the speedo and walking out to the pool with towel and goggles in hand. I dont think about it. Now I havent worn them to the beach other than once and I only wore them in public for like 30 mins before we left.

At my college there is a waterpolo club that meets to play and I have gone to one of their meets. I couldnt handle the amount of swimming they did but I plan on going back to try it again. Its just a good outlet to wear a speedo and be considered "normal".

In any context that involves water or sunshine where a swimsuit would be worn, why would wearing a speedo type suit not be "normal"?

Just do whatever you are comfortable with. What Dave and Texas_Swimmer said is cool.

Presumably it's okay to wear them in the mens locker room, taking a shower (as some men are even naked)?
Right - that means you only have a few seconds of exposure from the locker room to the pool, and when swimming you won't be noticed. Therefore no problem...

My opinion is just to go in a speedo and get it over with.

Or if you need to build courage in steps, just wear 1060's vintage "Trunks" -basically nylon version of gym shorts.

By the way, I'm noticing a lot more guys out on the running and jogging trails in 1980's running shorts so I believe wearing speedos in the pool may be next.

Hey CD, I am also seeing more younger swim team guys wearing briefs over jammers. Jammers still rule but on the team I coach we went from no guys in briefs 2 years ago to 8 of 12 in them now. They tell me that they like that the suits are way more colorful now than just splice patterns and that Phelp's and Lochte's preference for briefs also has been in influence. And one guy said they just feel better than jammers.

Agree on shorter running shorts... I never went away from the really short spllit cuts. For a while they were hard to find.

Awesome. Good thing FINA banned those full body suits.

Its just from where I live a lot of people arent accepting of speedos if you wear them to the beach or public pool for relaxing. Its just speedos are attached to a lot of homophobia. At least from what I observe.

Texas is part of the so called "Bible Belt" and I'm not surprised that homophobia is rampant there.

However, there are also gay bathhouses in Austin and Houston so there's a lot of hypocricy too.

The best way to overcome the idea that Speedos = Gay is to demonstrate otherwise. Stick with a black or navy 2-3" suits that doesn't draw attention or expose too much. There may be a look or two from the Bible thumpers, but the lack of blatant actions and conservative suit will do a lot to have that group rethinking the stereotype. It isn't easy to compromise like that, but it isn't easy breaking a stereotype image from some people's mind. I used that tactic when I went to meet my future inlaws. She had begged me to buy a pair of conservative trunks (my usual suits in my pool were very skimpy and exposing) but I held my ground - to a point. I got a Black on Black striped Endurance that wasn't too tight. I got "the look" and she got "the talk" about my suit, but before the weekend was over they totally accepted it and figured if I was sleeping with their daughter I probably wasn't gay. Change takes time. It has taken time for the Gay Pride and flamers to convince the public that Speedos = Gay so it will take time to change it back. You can consider it your mission to change minds and opinions.
