Get out of the Speedo Closet

Guys, its time to get out of the closet. I read way too often on the board about guys that have speedos and keep them in hiding places so no one will know. Then there are the guys that take pics of themselves with their cel phones in the bathroom mirror. Then the perpetual question "is it speedo friendly?" Why? Why are you ashamed of your speedos? What do you expect to happen when you wear them? Do you think your friends or family are going to banish you to a desert island or never speak to you again? It sounds like terrible insecurity. Both in your self, your body and your ability to retain friends if you think or act for yourself.
Guys, we are talking about a swimsuit. The world will not spin off its axis if you wear one in front of someone else. Start off safe and modest if you think there will be an issue. Black or Navy blue about 3" sides is not overly revealing by size and the dark fabric is less exposing of the contents.(don't get them too tight) There will be comments - there are always comments when someone does something a little different. Don't let them bug you - fire back. You'll get the "I wouldn't wear that" -- respond: "If I had your body I wouldn't either" or the "only gays wear those things" -- your respond: "And you know this how?" Both responses will turn the tables on them. You will be surprised on how fast any comments will stop -- unless they see they are getting to you. Then they will continue to taunt you. The truth is, most will be jealous that you have the nerve to wear them or do something different. The less issue you make of them, the less they will too.
You have to use a mirror to get a pic? Why? You don't have one single friend that you can ask? Are you that insecure that your wearing a speedo has been never been shared with anyone, even your best friend? How about just saying to a friend when they are over. "I've been thinking about wearing a speedo and swimming for exercise and I just bought one. Will you take a couple pics of me so I can see how it looks?" Would that really send a friend screaming into the night? Have him turn on you and never speak to you again? I am guessing that neither will happen. If they are a friend, they will comply with your request or decline if they aren't comfortable doing it. You are not asking for something outrageous. It may lead to his trying them on too and becoming your speedo buddy, or he may just take the pic and never mention it. Again, ask! The worst he can do is say no. Remember, you can always wear them under your regular board shorts and let your friends see you in the speedos when you change. You can even make a joke about your sexy speedo under suit. Comments, if any, will be a barometer of reactions when the shorts aren't there.
I have a friend that hates my speedos and they gross him out. (With his build I am glad he would never consider them) I have told him that I wear them all the time at home due to comfort and convenience (have a pool) and if he is going to stop by without calling ahead he will see me wearing them (from g-strings to regular speedos) I will be nice an pull on a pair of shorts when he arrives, but with no advance call he will catch a peek. He is my best friend and that is one thing he knows about me and accepts. That's what friends and family are. They accept you for you and your quirks without judging.
"Is the beach speedo friendly" give me a f---ing break. It is a beach, people wear swimsuits and speedos are swimsuits so wear them. I have been on beaches and pools all over the world wearing speedos. May have been the only one wearing one, but never had an unfriendly experience. (actually sometimes they may be too friendly and will approach you hoping for more than a swim) Remember, everyone on the beach is a stranger and don't really care what you have on. They will look out of a momentary curiosity, as they do when anyone arrives, but they will not jump up with and Uzzi and cut you down. Actually, it is the best place to wear them at first. With only strangers around you can get used to the feel in public without the pressure of friends or family making comments.
Guys, get over yourselves and wear your suits. Take them out of your hiding places and put them on and wear them. You are putting too much importance in wearing a swim suit. It could never be as traumatic as you have yourselves thinking. Besides, it will prepare you for other things in life that you may have a mental block about. If you can't even imagine being in the same room with another human wearing a speedo, maybe it is time to get professional help.

I agree!! Its so hot when you see or hear about another guys speedo like when i was inspecting a house to rent and the previous owners swimwear was drying in the bathroom. He wore a navy blue TYR suit.
Ive left my speedos drying with the rest of the washing while friends have visited. The black adidas suit was never prominently displayed on the drying rack but if my guests looked at my laundry they would have seen it.
I went on a holiday with a mate after he broke up with his gf, we have seen each other in briefs underwear but only ever admired from afar ;) he's married now. I wanted to swim and tan one day in my speedo and I was so nervous. I got changed and casually came out of my room and went by the pool. I was so nervous that he would see me in a speedo and so maybe my conversation with him was awkward. He "checked me out" for sure, but never felt awkward or sexual. Just interested.
When I was much younger and on a family holiday I shared the same room as an older family friend. I had never met him but because of the family connection we were very casual. His body was so hot and his personality so lovely, but because I was young and confused I didn't know what was going on. One day he came into the room and changed into a speedo right before my eyes. I couldn't help but stare as he pulled down his shorts and briefs at the same time while playing with his cock and then trying to untangle and fit his speedo. He had balls and hair and the drawstring tangled. He invited me to go swimming (even tho I was already pretty wet!) but due to my boner I couldn't move, I said I'd be right out!! As soon as he left I jerked off into my speedo, which I then covered with boxers, and wore into the pool. Wish I'd joined him in changing, maybe he would have noticed my boner and had some helpful horny words.

My mother knew at the time I had a Speedo, and sometimes wore it. But not 7+ of them.

I wear mine several times per week to swim or to the practice I go to. I'm surprised at the friendly experiences I have. Well, I guess that is why I like swimming.

I don't sunbathe much around here in Pennsylvania, but if I were to go to the beach in Florida, I wouldn't think twice to wear one of my suits.

I used to get really nervous. While I was away I took some swimming classes in California to learn to use the time clock, read shorthand, and swim butterfly. I got hooked on swimming, and "speedos" were normal there - to see this was a real eye opener and totally changed my outlook.

I wanted to join a team practice and meet other people - which I have done. I was also really intimidated by the thought of going to my first practice.

Since I live in Pennsylvania I had a choice - wear them only on the rare times when I am on vacation or take up swimming. It would be nice to go on vacation lots and wear fashion swimwear but not realistic.

Would be nice if it was that easy. I heard in the news recently that guys have been arrested at the beach for wearing speedos. Signs have also been put up since that say like no speedos and such on this beach. This is in CA too...

I have some friends who give me some hell about it, and some who just notice, but I am just at the point that dont care. I wear what I like, as should what everyone should do.

I 100% agree!

I don't like all these post asking "how to buy speedos" or "how to wear them without friends/family noticing". Grow up. Just wear them...

Like aussieBum's motto: If you doubt yourself, wear something else.

I also get a lot of complements from people while wearing the speedo.

well, you have to remember that yes it is good to just come out in the open with the speedo (which I'm all for) but you shouldn't just attack the people who just aren't ready for that step yet, yes it is one that needs to be took, but sadly in this world we live in its not the easiest for every single person, so some have to figure out ways to still enjoy speedos themselves until they are ready to break out

-sorry not big on people dissing other peoples posts-

Yeah, fair enough. I understand where you're coming from, generally I don't do it.

On second reading perhaps the initial post was a little OTT. I'd never ask my friends to take pictures of me in speedos... Not like he's suggesting at least haha

I just want to get the point across that, by being ashamed of wearing speedos in public or around friends, people who in fact ENJOY speedos are helping to perpetuate the belief that it's weird or too revealing or taboo or whatever their issue is.

I don't mean to upset anyone. I admit I don't go to the local wave pool wearing my speedo.

I don't wear n2n suits, thongs, see thru or unlined suits, etc for swimming. I've never had sex in the showers or locker room.

If guys are being arrested for regular speedos it is pretty pathetic, and of course I wish more guys wore swim briefs.

All I am saying is I've never been bothered for wearing mine and most people have been friendly.

If you've got the body to wear speedos then go for it. The only time I can see someone getting in trouble with the law if if they're wearing the thongs, or unlined suites in a public place and causing a scene. Its just a swim suit, women wear them all the time all over the place, so people can just grow up and deal with it.

I've had a few looks for the jammers at the local Y, but pretty much ignore people. I wear them for training, and whatever. Don't hang around in the hot tub with them mostly because it ruins the material.

Its not more or less offensive than anything made of spandex.

I never intended for my initial comments to cause such a stir or discussion.

A speedo is a swimsuit and something that is appropriate to wear when swimming. I see there is a lot of insecurity about stripping down to a speedo and I must admit that I don't understand the problem. I will respect your doubts about friends or family but I think you are overly concerned.

Here are a couple of thoughts that may get you into your speedo and in a way you will be accepted. You can always join a gym or pool and take up lap swimming. If you show up with your speedo no one will think anything about it at the pool, and when you hang them to dry in the shower at home you have the excuse that the coach or lifeguard said that is what you should wear doing laps (lie or not, it is believable) If your friends happen to come over and you are wearing them you have the just got back from doing laps and will be dressed in a minute. Your friends will probably make some comment and that is when you tell them they are what you wear for doing laps because they are more practical and comfortable. How the conversation goes from there will tell you a lot. Just remember, be confident in your swimwear choice and no making excuses. When I had comments from my friends that they would never wear a speedo I responded that it is understandable if you don't have enough to fill one. Now they are on the defensive and you have showed them you are confident enough in yourself that you can wear them. You can also go for being in shape. If the gay issue comes up you can fire back you didn't know that -- how did they find out. Or, depending on the friends, Hey, you promised you would tell them about us. Again, they are off guard and on the defensive.

A little self confidence and a little nerve will help you conquer your fears. Another way is to put on your speedos and go to a beach or pool where no one knows you so you can actually be seen in them and not worry about recourse. In your speedo (no cover up shorts) walk across the area, looking ahead in a confident manner on your way to you sunning spot. You will see that very few will give any more notice than anyone arriving gets. Keep it conservative though -- no bright colors or patterns or extreme cuts. You need to start in basic black, blue, green or maroon.

These few suggestions may make it easier for you to actually let your speedos see the light of day and get out of the hiding places and into the pool. And for you to overcome your issues -- or your insecurities about what your friends will think.

Good luck! Maybe the next pics will be taken by a friend at the beach and not of you and your iphone. We are rooting for you to get past the fears and get out there.

Guys, I have been to many countries around the world and USA is the only country where people have an issue with speedos. In every other country thery are acceptable beach or swim wear. I wear AussieBums wherevere I go and if I get any looks at all they are all positive , from both males and females.
P.S. Wearing speedos (my favourite are my AussieBun 1.5 inch wonderjock classic either "ice blue" or "red") is a great way to meet women on the beach. I am straight but I'm sure it works even better for gay guys

I've seen and had similar problems as htechtim.

I was "escorted" off a local lakefront swimming area for wearing a rather modest squarecut speedo, being taken right by bikini-clad girls. With their reaction, you might have thought I was streaking!

There was a municipal pool in southern Utah that had proposed a ban on two-piece suits on women. There were howls of protests from the community, so they lifted that ban. The Speedo ban: it's still there. Only knee-length board shorts are acceptable.

It's odd isn't it? Back in the 70s-80s, people didn't have an issue with speedos and men wore them all the time. Nowadays, there's an awful double standard that women can wear bikinis because it's 'hot' but men can't wear speedos because it's 'gross'.
