Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?

Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
I'm an average guy, 47 years old, 5'-11" high and currently weigh 178 lbs. with a 39" waist. I don't have a protruding gut or hanging potbelly by any means but currently I'm still quite a bit away from having a washboard abdomen. I am actually losing weight since I'm working out about 5 times a week. I am not well hung and only have about 5-3/4" max., however I do experience quite a bit of shrinkage in the water due to the temperature and such. I prefer to wear Speedos at the pool and the beach because they're sexier looking (to my eyes) and quite frankly I feel more comfortable in them than baggy swim shorts that I think tend to make me look frumpy anyway. I'm not an athlete or competitive swimmer but at the same time I don't like swim shorts because they also tend to weigh me down in the water and are hard to move in when I try to swim. Is it OK for me to wear my bikini Speedos?
P.S.: Unfortunately, for us Americans, Speedos are frowned upon (for non-competitive swimming) particularly by females that think it's just gross.....lol. But probably most of you already know this fact. By the way, anyone out there know any specific exercises for getting rid of the gut besides just sit-ups?

You know the saying,"Washboard abs start in the kitchen." Keep exercising and eat well.Throw out the junk. Do what makes you feel good!
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
Hey hpfny.
If your comfortable wearing them, then it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks
We sound pretty similar. I've actually lost 110lbs, 5'11", 190lbs, with 34" waist. Love speedos, but having lost that much weight, there is a lot of loose skin. So personally, I'm not comfortable in public. I stick to wearing them under board shorts.
So like I said, "Go for it"! And, post some pics.

Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
Well, for better or worse, here I am, I hope that no one is unduly repulsed.....lol. I'm wearing a size 41 Speedo but my waist is 39 at the belly button. I might size down as I continue to lose inches from my abdomen but I don't want anything too constricting yet that will squeeze my fat. At my age, I probably lack the youth hormones to develop an Ab say like the one in Dave's avatar. But who knows, I might be able to approximate the Abs in GRswimmer's avatar. Incidently, I did not beautify myself for the shot. I naturally have no hair on my chest, back, thighs and only some slightly on my arms and legs. I just get haircuts, shave my beard and trim my pubes. That's all!
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
I say downsize the trunks and you'll look great!!
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
Definitely go with a smaller size suit. But other than that, you look good.
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
Don't be concerned not having the body for the suit -- you look good! How you have them pulled up is a bit of an issue with me. I don't know if downsizing is the answer -- can't really see how tight they are. BUT definitely lower them on your hips so the top edge is flat - not pulled up.
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
You look great, what are you concerned about? It's all in your own sense of comfort. If you are looking for something that rides lower on the hip, I suggest Sporti. Didn't think they would work for me, but they do, I'm a little 'chunky' and the Sporti, b/c it rides lower on the hip, minimizes the muffin-top effect. The Sportis are more rubbery and more clingy than Speedo or Dolfin. Totally get you about Canada/US perceptions, people assume I must be from Europe, but no, true Canadian boy! I don't know what all the fuss is, and totally agree about the comfort for swimming. Boardies are OK, but you can't beat the comfort and freedom offered by speedos or similar suits. Carry on!
PS, I am 52.

Thanks all for your support. I tend to be a husky guy and have never been skinny but neither have I been obese. Growing up, my peers would mistake husky [or "chunky" (to quote you)] for being fat. In any case, I think that you nailed it on the head though about minimizing the "muffin-top effect" which is my main concern from the outset. I've never heard of Sporti or even seen them for sale locally. But, I did google them and found them at SwimOutlet.com unless you know of another vendor where they can be sourced for cheaper.
In any case, maybe on my next post I can show some more progress. The gut is very difficult to get rid of especially for a person who has a sedentary desk job like myself.

If you think a Speedo style suit is questionable for your personal body type, you might want to try a "Square Cut" or something like the 1960s-70s style loose fitting "Trunks".
Short running shorts are also a substitute for trunks and they're a hell of a lot better than "Boardies"!!!

Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
Dude u look fantastic for your age! Def u need a smaller and tighter pair of trunks, official speedo shops i use, bit pricey but i find go for smaller suit and u will look great. Your bulge will look bigger then to people too and thats a good thing. Plus the feeling of tighter suit is awesome. When wearing pull the sides down so they aren't riding up ur hips. Keep up good work!
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
My story is similar, hpfny. I was pretty inactive up until my late 20s, and then got into a routine and knocked off alot of weight, but it wasn't until I pumped/toned up a bit that I tried on the speedos. I'm 5'9 average build, at one point got my weight down to 135 from 210, but even then, I still had the love handles--just my body type. I am now 183, and pretty happy with that, have maintained it for a few years now.hpfny wrote:Thanks all for your support. To my knowledge, swimoutlet.com is the best source for Sporti. It's a great suit, great price, and in my experience, they stand up to chlorinated water better than most suits. Even when my navy blue sporti had to be retired after an incredible 4 months use, it was by that time dusty blue, but still had some stretchiness left in the fabric, and still fit pretty well. It comes in various cuts/styles, you can check them out, and I would rate it true to stated size. Some guys say to size up, depends on your comfort. You can read their reviews on the site. The are skimpy and clingy, and also extremely comfortable for doing laps. I am 34", and that size fits quite well on me.
Speedo on, dude!
Re: Is it OK for me to wear my Speedos?
I'm not the super fit trim guy like most of you all, but I'm happy with who I am. After several consecutive injuries resulting in several years of doing very little, I have begun to shed the flubber. I prefer the Sporti suits from swimoutlet, and am happy to get 3-4 months out of them.
I have to agree the fit is great, and I have no problem wearing them for lap swimming. I swim mostly at a YMCA, and for a conservative organization, I've had no comments or objections about the jammers. There are a few guys who wear the brief style as well.
Can't say enough good things about Sporti or swim outlet!
Some is coming to the northern hemisphere, so jump in and enjoy guys
