Clever swim briefs sizing changes

Post by Harsh1994 » Sat Jun 17, 2023 12:13 am

Hi everyone, I recently bought a Clever swim brief, model Valais, size S, and I noted that it measures like an M from older collections. Last week I bought another Clever swim brief, model Oracle, size M, to be the birthday gift for a friend (not the same in the story that I relate in another post, but his ex who I will travel with to Brazil), and it's bigger than an M that I have since 2019. More curiously, I had tried the Oracle size M -which should measure like an old L- and it fits me perfectly even when I had always worn sizes S and M, maybe due to being a mini-slip format. Under Clever old sizing, S fitted 28"-30", while M was 30"-32". The new sizing seems to be S 30" and M 32", being in the upper end of previous sizes.

Here comes a size comparison between models and collections. I post it because maybe there are some Clever swim brief users in the forum and this would be a good guide for future purchases.

All the same material? Sizing definitely shifts over time as well.

Fabric has also changed. Until early 2022, Clever swim briefs used a Lycra fabric with 85% polyester and 15% elastane. It feels very durable and holds colors very well, plus some older collections (eg.: the 2013 vintage flags collection) had a shiny look.

Well, since mid 2022 and along the sizing change, they modified the fabric composition to 78% polyester and 22% elastane. It’s still good but not as resistant as previous collections from Clever and it feels like a little bit worse quality. I wore the Valais twice and it started to show some damage on the rear. I hadn’t experienced this with older Clever swim briefs, but still my favo(u)rite brand of underwear and swimwear.

They have probably changed from small Asian S-M-L sizing to the larger European and American S-M-L sizing now that they are selling more suits worldwide. You can see my old size XL Mategear suit in my Avatar photo at right to see how small they were.
