Speedos are the most environmentally friendly swim suit.
Less spandex & lycra = less environmental impact!!!

I wonder if the "guys" referred to in that sign also agree that "chicks" shouldn't be seen in bikinis?

I'll bet some asshole showed up in a white Aussiebum or something that showed off shaft or way too much detail at a family pool. After reading some of the posts on speedo boards, it seems some guys wear speedos as an excuse to expose themselves in public and take little or no consideration for others (mainly kids) around pools or at the beach. A normal speedo is not going to be rejected. I used to manage a large hotel and on occasion someone would show up almost totally exposing themselves with too skimpy suits or transparent suits. We had to impose a rule of male suits no less then 2" on side and white suits had to be lined - including board shorts. Woman had to have breasts covered totally, and bottoms covering total public area.(since women's bikini bottoms are more acceptable due to their plumbing, sides not dictated) Thongs were not permitted on anyone. We never enforced the rules unless there was a question of taste or exposure at a pool that families used. I recall one of the regulars that broke the rules all the time but his 1" or less bikini was a dark color, fit well and no detail or cleavage showed. She wore a thong but she knew not to bend from the waist and it wasn't too skimpy - top or bottom.
Basically, what I am saying that no matter what the situation there always seems to be a couple assholes that want to go in and screw it up for everybody. Whenever I see a guys posting about a transparent suit that is having fun flaunting his exposure, I just pray he has the common sense to do it at private pools or on a gay or secluded non family beach. Guys like that ruin it for all of us that just like to wear a speedo as a swim suit - not as an add we're desperate to get noticed. It also adds to the stigma that speedos = gay.
Maybe I am just old enough to have reached the conclusion that the phrase "there is a time and place for everything" is true.

What intrigues me is the figure wearing a speedo is overweight, the boardies one is slim. What sort of characterisation is that?

Gotta laugh. Some prude wasted precious minutes of their life making that sign. What a goose!
It wouldn't stop me - although I do agree with choosing an appropriate speedo for each location. Fortunately I have quite a few styles to choose from!
No true beach-goer in Australia should want to ban them. It's our birthright! Come on Australia - let's not become ultra-conservative. It's too boring.

I was sort of thinking the same way on this.... I was kind of shocked that it was in Australia. Florida maybe....but not Australia!! An Australian invented the Speedo!!!

Yes - stereotyping us! Incorrectly.

Eh, on second thought, let 'em have Surfers beach. It's a crowded dump anyhow! There are kilometers of better beach on either side of it!

I heard that at swimming pools in France, you can't wear board shorts for hygiene reasons. I know in some clubs you can't use the pools if you wear board shorts.

I believe in the 1930s, the inventors of the modern swimming pool (Adolph Keifer and Roy Jacuzzi) did experiments to determine the best way to keep the filtration system clean & hygenic and these were their recommendations:
Urinate in the restrooms then take a thorough shower before getting in the pool.
Wear minimal clothing -IE- trunks for men and bras & bikinis for women - or swim in the nude if permissible. The latter was the better of the options.
I kid you not, these are the results of a certified scientific analysis!!!

My father went to college in the seventies. He had to take swimming in gym. They swam naked.
