I know this topic was kinda touched on a month or two ago, but I was wandering, how many people on this board had to convert their parents into accepting speedos as a perfectly fine piece of swimwear? I know I still have to. My parents aren't exactly sure how much they like it but they know that their is nothing now that they can do about it. I have been struggling with this for several years now.

Both my parents were born in europe as was I so they are used to the idea of speedos.

My mom did say a few times that she didn't like them.... not specifically refering to me, but speedos in general.

My dad on the other hand is prob a bigger fan than I am and still wears them.

For me the big obstacle was "how do i explain wearing speedos when i have been wearing shorts since around 9". That was taken care of by telling them I had to get them in order to put on a scuba suit and be comfortable, but they never really even questioned it.

Although stretch trunks were popular at the time (50s - 60s), Mom never was happy about Speedos and said so on several occasions. I think she didn't want to acknowledge my budding adolesence. Dad didn't care.

When my dad wouldn't let my three sisters get two-piece suits, mom intervened and got him to lighten up. He probably didn't want my sisters to look grown(ing) up.

Im not sure what they object to. I am not sure if it is that they think I might be made fun of for wearing them (which has never happened by the way) or they are like everybody else and think that the clothes make the man.

I also am a scuba diver and that is a good suggestion on how to break it to them. Why didnt I think of that? Well anyways, what kind of speedo do you wear when diving? Do you wear a wetsuit too or just the speedo? Just wandering, what gear do you have? I have the ScubaPro Glide Plus BCD w/ air 2 and the x650 reg.

Hey Erik,

I wish i knew the answers to all those questions, but unfortunetly ive only went scuba diving once when i was in europe and i also had to wear a wet suit for water canyoning.

I am planning on starting intro lessons this winter in the pool to get my first level certification.

But yeah, I think anytime u put on a wet suit u should wear a speedo.... shorts or boxers in my mind are way too uncomfortable.

My speedo is actully an Adidas swim brief... just got it in Europe, its nothing special, but does everything i need it too lol. You can have a look at a few of my previous posts where i posted pics of myself.

Getting speedos for a diving class or P.E. class is a reason if ya need some kind of explanation to make it acceptable. Comments about speedos is akin to comments about gays. Popular culture says it's ok to do it, but that usually comes to a halt when faced with knowing someone gay or someone who has a "reason" to wear speedos.

Some time ago I was at a store which exclusively sold competitive swimwear, often outfitting entire teams. One woman was with her nephew or grandson and helping him select a pair for his visit (probably a back-east kid visiting California who had never been in a backyard pool). When the kid tried on trunks, she was helpful with praise and he picked out a couple which she said fit well and looked good on him. Kid left with a smile.

Elsewhere in the store were parents buying team trunks for their young son who just joined the neighborhood swim team. The store owner started with a size suggestion and offered the boy a size 26 to try on. The mother kept objecting at each size until she finally asked for a size 34. At that point the owner explained to the mother and dad the purpose of competitive swimwear and again recommended size 26 or 28. He looked at dorkdad and asked him if he thought the trunk size looked right. DD totally wimped out and mumbled something about whatever his mother thought was right.

Which kid do you think left the store with a positive image of himself?

When the guy apologized for keeping me waiting, I commiserated with him about the mother's behavior. All he would say is "I feel sorry for the kid".

As for me, mom didn't/couldn't keep me from wearing stretch nylon briefs or speedos. But she did put my trunks in the Goodwill bag first the moment swim weather ended.
