OK, I know this example's fictional, but for me seeing the Pope in white Speedos was certainly a surprise.
Mind you, I would have been equally startled if they were in Cardinal red!
Anyone got any other examples?

The most surprising person I have seen wearing speedos was a straight friend from the University. He looked so good in them. Sadly, it was only a dream. It didn't actually happen.

Australian PM Tony Abbott. Not really so surprising, as Oz is the birthplace of the Speedo.

Mel Gibson wore one in a movie called "Tim" (1977) that he made when he was young. Of course, this was produced in Australia where speedos were common. Sides were wider then. I saw the film on U.S. TV years later when Gibson had become conservative.

Aussie Jesse Spencer (House, Chicago Fire) when he was younger. Yeah, nylon rules, lycra not so much.

Was he a competitive swimmer in the day? Wow, he speaks French, plays the violin. His hair was longer on House, and I didn't recognize him from this image. His father and brothers actually are MDs. Sweet boy.

Nah, not that I know of. He started off doing Neighbours, a TV soap where it seems most every Aussie actor starts off their career (if they're not on Home & Away) such as Russell Crowe, the Hemsworth brothers, and Guy Pearce. These shots are from his 2003 film Swimming Upstream, a biopic of Tony Fingleton who skipped the '64 Tokyo Olympics to attend Harvard.

It's a well regarded film. He made the right choice going to Harvard. I was never a degree candidate, but I worked and studied there a couple summers on break from a less prestigious university in Massachusetts. I also took courses there in the night school (Yes, Harvard has one...) a decade later. Even as an outsider, I found the place magical. I don't get there often anymore, and when I do, it's still magical. Here's an article about Tony Fingleton and his visit to Harvard some years after he graduated. It was published in the student-run paper, The Crimson. He did swim for Harvard when he was there.

Then there was the time Prince William watched with teammates while making his water polo debut for the Scottish national universities' squad in the annual Celtic Nations tournament against Wales and Ireland in Cardiff in 2004.

Famous, should be Messi, He is commonly accused of being introverted and shy, you expect this from Cristiano or Sergio Ramos.

It surprises even more due to Messi being Argentinian. There's a note about Argentinian men and it said that they don't wear speedos even when they travel to Brazil... I think Messi wearing speedos is pure European influence.

Celebrity-wise, probably Zac Efron for Baywatch. In my private life, one of my best friends from freshman year in college. He’d done swim team in high school but always wore knee-length jammers and did the same when we met up at the college’s rec center pool to swim together. Then one day I showed up in the locker room and he was waiting for me in only a speedo. Yeah I was a little distracted during our workout that day haha
