I bought a TYR, medium tech, jammer a few years ago. I think it was about $US80 on sale. The leg grippers were so tight, I couldn't wear the suit. The longer I wore it, the worse it got. In the eighties, they had speedos that were generically called '"paper suits," They were a speedo brief cut, but made of a very thin fabric. Competitive swimmers wore them downsized and super tight. The theory was that they were super streamlined, literally like a second skin. They lasted for only a few races before they started to stretch out of shape. I hate to say it, but jammers ARE faster than briefs. Watching a swimmer underwater at speed, when you see skin rippling against the pressure of the water rushing by, that's hydrodynamic drag. The more skin you can cover with tight polyester, the better. That's why they made rules that you can't wear material below your knees, and above the waist for men and beyond the shoulders for women.

Not to mention some suit makers were sneaking neoprene material into them, which floats! Totally agree. I'd forgot about the added neoprene.
