Have you ever used Speedos to scare someone?

Don't get me wrong I didn't dress a speedo and scared the neighborhood, but I used the word "speedo" to discourage a friend from using the pool.

This situation happened a couple of years ago, when I was on a business trip in Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the trip planning, I remembered that a high-schoolmate went there to study something related to aviation engineering, so I decided to contact him in case we can meet there and maybe he can take me out to get to know the city. He was happy and told me about his family and how his children didn't know anything about Costa Rica.

He apparently had to leave school because of the new family he was forming with an Argentinian lady and this caused problems with his parents who stopped supporting him. His family is ridiculously millionaire, his father owns a soccer team in Costa Rica, my friend could have the future that he dreamed and his father would purchase it for him, but destiny put him in front of a big challenge: to raise kids in another country. Well, at the end we agreed that I would bring them souvenirs, costarican typical candy and some other goods for the kids, in exchange he would take me out on tour.

Argentinean summers are quite hot, particularly in February when my meetings took place. The first day on my arrival, I went directly to the pool. It has tempered water and is located on the rooftop with a 360 view to the city. Due to its location, the hotel has some particular rules, men or women with long hair should use the swimming cap, and only swim suits-attires were allowed, this doesn't mean you cannot use shorts, but they were asking not to use shorts that could be worn on the streets, per hygienic reasons, hard-to-clean pool, they kindly asked to wear swimwear. This wasn't a problem for me, since I was alone and didn't know anyone (plus I was the only one in the pool), I decided to wear my speedo, it was a black endurance brief that I use in my swimming class in Costa Rica.

Monday night was the agreed time to go out and check Buenos Aires. I arrived from work, change my clothes for something really comfy (t-shirt, shorts and tennis). My friend texted asking if the hotel was the famous one with a rooftop pool (he actually used Argentinian words, I laughed as how fast he lost the costarican vocabulary), I confirmed my address and my friend replied he was with his kid very close from there. I was happy as I was going to meet his eldest and tell stories about Costa Rica. So, I went to the lobby with a bag of souvenir to wait for him.

"Cheeeeeeeeeeeee!!" I heard, it was my friend using the argentinean reference for "dude" (I was very upset because in Costa Rica we use "Mae"- "Pura vida Mae"). After all the greetings, I had a moment to look at him, he was wearing a tank top, some short shorts (southamericans really know about summer short shorts) and sandals, his kid was dressing the same. "It would be hard to walk all around in sandals", I thought, but I was sure he won me in comfy-attire. While his kid was looking at the goods I brought, my friend asked me if they can pass to the pool and enjoy the rest of the day at the hotel.

I was really scared, didn't know what to say, I didn't expect that, I didn't even expect that the hotel staff will let them pass. Then I remembered about the pool rules regarding attire. "Dude, the thing is that the hotel has particular rules about the attire, he was listening, "they force you to wear speedos", I whispered, so no one else can hear me... "Oooh that's not an issue", he laughed, "we have our speedos underneath the shorts". Now I was stunned, I couldn't hide my scared face, "I used to live with brazilians at the university, you get used to wear 'sungas' - typical brazilian swimwear- all the time. My wife comes from a border city with Brazil, called Corrientes, there, tiny bathing suits don't scare us".

With no other option, I went to the front-desk and ask if my friends could accompany me to the pool, they didn't see any problems, and gave the permission to go. I was sad because I couldn't get to see the city at that time and nervous about being in speedos around my school mate and his son. I stopped at my bedroom, got my speedos and joined them at the rooftop. My friend was wearing a poker cards print brief and his kid one with a cartoon characters print, let's say mine was the most boring of the group, single black brief.

That little fellow enjoyed the pools and the jacuzzi until 10 pm, when they closed the pool area. This was the first time someone from high school saw me in speedos after graduation and truly surprising, the first time I saw my classmate wearing one too. I try to scare him away, but I was the surprised. Next day, he came again, but this tome alone, took me to walk, he thanked me about the previous night, he was passing by financial crisis and that pool time was probably the only fun thing his kid would have during summer. He told me a lot of stories about how he got converted to speedos while living in South America.

Nope, never used speedos to scare anyone. And wouldn't be scared of speedos myself - just intrigued and a little excited.

I did take my cousin on holiday once to Cornwall. When we got to the destination he needed the loo. While he was away I hid his shorts and swim shorts in the chest of drawers in the room. I the. Put a speedo in his bag. I got changed into a t-shirt and shorts and waited for him to return. I said to him “ok get changed and hurry up i want to ha e a walk down to the beach”. He said 5mins I will get changed. At this point he started to take stuff out of his bag, t-shirts, boxer shorts, socks. He couldn’t find his shorts only the Speedo I put in his bag. He was starting to panic. I said come on I am waiting. He pulled the speedo out and said this isn’t mine. I said it’s in your bag son. He looked like he was going to cry. I said you better put it on and come to the beach. At this point he sat on the bed with his head in his hands. I said phone your mom see what’s happened. Perhaps she forgot to pack your swim shorts and shorts. He said I don’t even own a pair of Speedos. His eyes were red. At that point I couldn’t carry on with it. I opened the drawer and showed him his stuff. He threw the speedo at me. I laughed. He asked who the speedo belonged to. I told him it was mine. At which point he started to take the mickey out of me. The next day at the beach, he went in the water with his cotton CK boxer shorts under his swim shorts and I was wearing and Adidas speedo under my shorts. As the morning went on my shorts and speedo dried quite quickly, his CK boxers were still very damp and showed a damp patch through his shorts front and back. I told him to wear a speedo under his shorts. He was 16 at the time at that age they know it all.

When I go to the beach alone, I go early and stake out a spot where I have plenty of room to bask in my speedo away from families. When I see families coming my way, I have on occasion stood up to proudly display my speedo and maybe that would steer them away from my area. I see it as...if they don't have an issue with a "speedoman", they'll sit near me which is fine with me. If they do, they'll go somewhere else. So maybe I am trying to "scare" them away.
