A New Zealand news site has a poll on whether bikini's are more acceptable at a pool than speedos. The poll is trending 80% towards Speedos, which makes no sense, as the advantages of a speedo while swimming are obvious, while the impracticality of a bikini is clear. Sigh. I know this crew can make this right, vote here:

To clarify, it appears this is comparing women wearing a bikini to men wearing a speedo. It’s not about what only men are wearing.

Yes, that's correct. But the point of a speedo for men is to swim, the point of a bikini for women is to tan - so at a pool, speedos are way more appropriate than a bikini.

I would only vote for BOTH, not just one or the other.

I’d say a speedo is way more “appropriate” than a bikini considering it covers much more than a bikini bottom. In fact most speedos cover more below the waist than the typical one piece woman’s suit.

I have nothing against a bikini but how could anyone say a bikini is more acceptable in public than a swim brief. Who in these Budgy Smuggler photos is more suitably dressed to be in public, the men or the women?

Both is what I agree with...

I absolutely agree that speedos are more practical than bikinis as swimwear - provided they're not too skimpy. Fashion-wise, bikinis probably trump speedos coz we're more comfortable with females being displayed as sex objects (doesn't mean we're comfortable with female sexuality - just with the overt display of female bodies). Bikinis don't strike me as practical sportswear because of the skimpiness and strings, but I suppose you can get more practical ones made up ...

Having said this, I'm just thinking about the swimming/movement aspect. If a woman's wearing a bikini for fashion reasons, and her whole bum isn't hanging out or something, I can't see the problem.

The real problem = how high the bikini is cut on the woman's backside? How high is too high?

Up to 19% just now when I voted. I voted for speedos, of course. But I agree it’s a stupid poll because the different suits are worn for different reasons. But naturally, bikinis are going to win out because who doesn’t like girls in bikinis? There is plenty of opposition to speedos, even in their most legitimate placement, when worn for lap swimming in a pool.

I think the girl should be allowed to wear a bikini in the sauna and hot tub area, but I bet it was a very skimpy bikini. She’s 26 years old, probably hot as hell, and hot girls love wearing skimpy bikinis and God bless them for it. There are two piece athletic swim bikinis now that show off a lot of cheek. But they,re made for swimming and they’re not thongs or G strings. I bet she could have gotten away with wearing one of those.

I honestly have no problem with girls showing off their butts in cheeky skimpy swimsuits. Delicious.

I agree. However I was pointing out the inconsistency of saying that speedos are not acceptable but bikinis are.

In an ideal world everyone would swim naked.
