G'day guys,
For Xmas the Married Guy's wife bought him a package of Masters Swim training sessions at the pool I go to and he has asked me to go along.
He thinks I'll like all the guys in speedos, which sounds inviting.
I've never been to an organized swim training thing since I was in school so not sure what to expect. I am pretty swim fit right now but have no idea how I'll go compared to an organized group.
Any of you guys go to Masters Swim training?
Dave

I did it for several years and really enjoyed it. Felt just enough to push myself, loved the camaraderie, and the on-deck coaching we had was excellent. I improved significantly as a result of Master’s. I stopped going because I couldn’t make the schedule work, but highly recommend it and would certainly go back if they modified the scheduled swim time.

Dave, I will second what MISwimmer mentioned. I have swam with masters swim teams for several years. Most teams have multiple lanes of various levels available during practice.
Most masters teams will have a coach or two on deck, and give you sets to swim. Plus they will usual give you advice on tweaking something on a stroke.
As for suits, you’ll see a variety of what guys wear. Some practices all the guys will be in Speedo’s. Others you’ll see some wearing jammers, or speedo/drag suit combo.
I highly recommend trying out a few masters workouts. It will push you more than you probably would swimming laps on your own.

I'll give bit of a counterpoint. I generally haven't enjoyed organized club practices. They are HARD. I dunno, for a swim workout I like to go at my own pace, hard or easy, relax, enjoy the scenery

, I have run into negative traits in masters groups enough to be wary--clique-y attitudes, major pecking-order atmospheres (you EARN your spot in this lane!) and overbearing coaches. Most annoying are groups that hog more of the pool than allotted and worse, semi-organized clubs that commandeer an entire pool during regular lap swim. I've snarkily told people several times, "I didn't see any organized club practice on the posted schedule."
That said, there are many friendly swim groups and they will no doubt push you beyond what you are usually motivated to do yourself.

The 2019 Masters Spring Nationals swim meet is underway in Phoenix. Wish I could have gone, looking at results so far I could have placed in the top 40 in my age group in my events. Gotta do that someday...
