Hi! I may have the good fortune of visiting Vienna next month for work. Would you be willing to give me ideas of what I should experience while I am in Austria? Should I focus my tourism within Vienna or is there another "must see" town within the country? It is unlikely I will ever return to Austria after this trip. Thank you.

It depends what your interests are. I've never been to Vienna but my sister went. She's a fan of the Sissi films so she went to the palaces, filming locations, Sissi museum, and such. Google is showing some great looking indoor swimming pools.

Depends what interests you have and how long you are there.
Mountains and lakes. Innsbruck, Salzburg are a couple of suggestions but not close to Vienna.

I tend to be into the arts - love museums, dance performances, architecture. Live music is also awesome.

I also like to do non-touristy things to get the real feel of the location.

I love nature, but not into winter hikes.

I LOVE Christmas. :-)

Does this help?

I will be arriving on a Monday and leaving Sunday, so a bit less than a week. I will need to attend the conference for some of this time, but anticipating having almost every evening free and likely a full day or two as well.

Vienna is a fantastic city! The Albertina art museum, as well the modern art museum are great. Most of the central ring is heavily congested with tourists, but if you stick to the back streets they aren’t an issue. If you like coffee there are loads of small cafés where you can get a really good cup. You also should check out the Hündertwasser house.

The Freud museum is very interesting as well, so are the the Jewish museum and the Hofburg “apartments.” The grilled sausages sold by street vendors are really good, currywürst is my favorite.

Saunas in Austria and Germany are co-ed and nudity is mandatory in the building, not only in the sauna room. It makes for a good cultural shock

Vienna or Wien is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. It offers a lot of possibilities and attractions to spent the time. A lot of castles, the cathedral, the river Danube/Donau, the new central-station..... and a lot more.
When you're there and you have time enough, so you can also visit Bratislava/Pressburg, the capital of Slovakia. This is one of the smallest capitals in Europe. It's only about 60 km away. This area is the only place in the world where 2 capitals of independent states are so close together. So take a train and in only about 1 hour you'll be there.
Have fun and a nice time!

So much to do and see in Vienna! One of my favorite European cities. Never been there with a capacity to find a spot to go swim though.
