In defense of speedos

Post by BJE » Mon Jun 26, 2017 6:48 pm

I read a little article about speedo wearing which was followed by comments. I copied and pasted the following comment because it was so well said. I agree with it completely and couldn't have said it better myself.

"American men for the most part are extremely uncomfortable in their own skin, or put another way, quite insecure. They have been in large part neutered by the feminization of the culture. Being confident and manly is no longer seen as a plus for the male population. Men have been turned into squeemish effeminate touchy feely mousy beings, afraid to do anything that might offend someone. In fact American men are beginning to take on many of the characteristics of Muslim women, hiding behind as much clothing as possible, especially when it comes to swimwear. That's why male boardshorts are often referred to as "murkas"....or male burkas. Then there's another reason for men not wearing speedo type swimwear. Most men can't swim and most men are quite fat and look rediculous in a speedo!"

Well in some regard men pressure each other to comply to rigid fashion. One old guy got offended that I wore 5" shorts on a regular basis to the gym and felt I needed to get the standard American shorts 7" or more because I was being inappropriate.

Self-appointed fashion policeman. I hope he goes into shock seeing the new, super-skinny, stretch fabric, chinos and jeans.

Funny you should mention skinny jeans. While I don't wear the super skinny variaty, I wear skinny jeans and chinos. I wouldn't wear any other cut.

I don't quite agree with this today. Especially in Aus. Recent years have seen the rise of the man again - beards, barbers, flannel shirts, tattoos, along with an increase in the popularity of manly hobbies and outdoor pursuits. I've also seen a rise in the number and varied ages of speedo wearers amongst mainstream men - maybe seriously, maybe ironically. Would be interesting to know if the two things are related - confident men and that confidence translating to proudly wearing the swim brief.

That's what I wear as well. I'm kind of skinny, so they fit.
