I'm planning on visiting Cozumel in the spring time and was wondering if anyone here has already been? Also wondering if speedos are common/acceptable. Any info would be nice to hear.

We went there a couple years ago in August and stayed in a very kid-friendly family resort. Here is what I remember.... At the beach, I would say there was at least 25% of the guys wearing them. It seemed like most (not all) of the guys were speaking French & with families, wives or girlfriends. My guess is they were French Canadians since it was August which is a big time for them to vacation. Also, I would find it hard to believe that many people from France would travel all the way to Mexico to sit on a beach when their beaches are as nice if not nicer. However, when you went to the pool or bar area, there was significantly less guys wearing them. From what I observed, those guys were mostly English speaking. I wore them in both areas and had no issue, looks, felt embarrassed or over exposed in front of kids. My kids were with me so that argument was mute. At the end of the day if someone did say something or give you any dumb look, you can be a super dick back at them because you will never see them again.

One thing to note, I would recommend you bring a pair of shorts to wear over your suit when you go into the bar or restaurant area. I remember seeing a sign that said no swimsuits (in the restaurant area) and I was stopped wearing a square cut suit one day thinking that it was long enough (verses my swim briefs the previous day) since they would let people in with board shorts. However, that was not the case. I ended up keeping a pair of thin Adidas athletic shorts in my bag that I could quickly throw on over my suit when I went to the food area. They were thin enough that they could dry as soon as I took them off again.

When you get back - tell us how it went. I would be interested in hearing if the spring season is different from when we were their during an August month.

My wife and I visited a resort in Cancun last year and I had no problems being the only speedo wearer we saw. Once you start talking to the other patrons, you'll quickly realize everyone gets gossiped about regardless of what they are wearing. So go for it. Like rmf pointed out, you'll never meet them again anyways.

Wow 2 completely different beach scenes. Hopefully some more people will chime in on their experiences while in Cozumel so I can have a good feel for how the beach scene will be when I get there.

PuertoVallarta is very open to men wearing speedos or briefs at the beach or even at the pool because many Mexican locals do along with the large GAY crowd & the Straight crowd It not something you should wear walking around town Most people do wear shorts or boards because they are versatile to wear anywhere which you can slip off to real swimming attire Beaches remind me of Europe where there is no stigma wearing them even the ones that should not Going PVR next Fri & have chosen my suits I am wearing with a couple of walking shorts & I know I will have a speedo tan when I leave since PVR is my favourite beach holiday with lots to do for every taste

G'day guys,

Years ago, like 8 years ago, I went to Tulum to an all inclusive resort. I was surprised how many Europeans were there. I'd agree with the 25% of guys who wore speedos.

I was there with a girl I dated for like 2 months at the end of a Canadian snowboard season. I didn't speedo it up but there was this gorgeous European guy who would walk up and down the beach all day wearing a black speedo and I know the chick was turned on by it and wanted me to keep my speeods on when we fucked.

And we did fuck a lot that trip.

Dave

Hey I went to Rivera Maya near Cancun with my family 2 years ago for Christmas, and we are going again next February. I'd agree 20-25% of the guys wore briefs. We stayed at an adult only resort.

I swam laps in the morning before the bar scene got going, and then stayed around the beach area. A few girls talked to me which was nice and I got a whistle from a guy once lol.

It feels a little funny being in front of my brothers like that, but other than that, it was a good time!

I always covered up to go to any of the restaurants.

I'm already trying to decide which suits I want to take

I was born in that region and I have been to Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cozumel, etc. You name it. I've visited countless resorts and all inclusive hotels, and I agree with that about 25% people wear speedos. They are mostly foreigners though. Mexicans are a bit to prude in this sense.

While wearing speedos outdoors is completely fine, wearing any kind of bathing suit to a restaurant is frowned upon, especially when wet. Hotel restaurants want to give all customers a good impression. Thats why they try and keep a minimal clothing requirement: pants and a t-shirt.

Been there, done that 3-4 times. Great beaches and speedos tend to be on us bold Ameri guys and the Euro guys. Dunno why. Guys insecure I guess. But it's wayyyyyy to freakin hot to wear long nylon board shorts. It's a speedo or nothing.

Well I made my trip and wore speedos almost every day. The first day I got there I was wearing short aussiebum swim shorts, but then took them off to reveal an Aussiebum WJ Loose 2.5 "Miami". The 2nd and 3rd day I wore a Classic 2.5 "Forest Green". 4th day I wore a Classic 1.5 in "Azure" blue. The fifth day I wore that again as I like the smaller 1.5 tan lines than the 2.5. I went snorkeling everyday while wearing them and it's a very pleasurable experience, especially with how clear the water was.

There were only 2 other guys I saw the whole time wearing speedos. There was maybe 5 people wearing square cuts, and the rest in board shorts. About half of the board shorts were mid-thigh length though, so there's some progress going on.

I also was disappointed because there were as many girls in thongs or cheeky swimwear as I had hoped. Maybe 3 in thongs and 20 in cheeky's. They all did have great looking asses though. Maybe this time of year just doesn't have the younger crowds. Most seemed to be around 30+, with the few younger women wearing the more revealing swimwear.

Now I just need to get the courage to wear speedos back in the US. I didn't feel bad wearing them on vacation because I would never see any of these people again. I did just get a jet ski so I might ride it out to some more secluded beaches and wear them there. If you don't wear speedos or square cuts on the jet ski then your board short becomes one with the wind pulling it up. That's why most people wear jammers on them. I don't want a tan line that low on my thigh though.

Congratulations on asserting your right and desire to wear a speedo every day, even if you were one of the very few! Thanks for the great trip report.
