Anyone else notice a major increase in speedos at the pool

The Olympics and RIO Beach TV coverage have had a major impact on the number of speedos in the last week! At the pool a group of 6 fit collage aged guys were wearing rather brief and bulge exposing speedos. Infact, they didn't put on shirts or short upon leaving. In addition at another pool I say several middle aged guys, with families wearing speedos.

I typically wear Aussiebum nylon briefs to the pool without any adverse reaction, but all of a sudden, I am no longer alone. Has anyone else noticed an increase in the number of briefs at the pool?

No, but I have seen more jammers, and even a couple of square cuts.

Yes. Here in Boston I have noticed several guys besides myself in a speedo. I would say we are still very much in the minority but every year it seems to be more and more. I have noticed most guys start in hammers then when they see others in speedos more than half convert.

I always thought that SoCal was fairly liberated, but I just got finished binge-watching Californication that ran from around 2007 to 2014 or so, and the only time I saw a character in speedos was when they wanted to make him look somewhat foolish.

Yes, I'm not surprised. That's the media's and American popular culture's attitude about speedos. They're only legitimate for water polo and platform diving. And maybe serious lap swimming. And perhaps gay interests. Otherwise, they're just fodder for clowning around, or responding to a dare, or other non-serious ridicule. This is what we're up against as serious speedo lovers here in the USA.

I have seen no increase at the pool where I go.

Thom,

A couple of years ago I downloaded all the seasons and I love it.

Where I live, I am the only one that wears a Speedo. When I do, no one seems to bat an eyelash. However, I can tell that some do stare at me every time I swim. At least I know I have made someone day! (laughs)

Dave,

Yeah, the series is pretty amazing. And I'm guessing it might be closer to life in Hollywood than we imagine. Surprising number of naked people. David Duchovny had pretty decent abs back then, and okay glutes. They wanted that middle-aged film producer who liked Runkle's wife to look silly, so of course they put him in speedos and had him act like a buffoon. Duchovny could have worn them and looked good.

I think you and I go to the same pool. I have noticed the same thing (though I have been away for the past two weeks due to a persistent cold). I think a lot of BU Medical and Dental School students swim there, not to mention LANES Swim Team in the early evenings (I rarely see any of them there outside of their scheduled time). I think it bodes well for us!

At my pool in VT have noticed definite trend to briefs as the swim team boys are now all wearing briefs whereas last season they were mostly in jammers. Heartening to see guys 12-16 apparently very comfortable in briefs and some clearly OK with hot prints and pretty narrow sides. The guys 20-40s still using jammers or shorts and only older guys like me seem perfectly comfortable in briefs. But it is a welcome change for the teenaged crowd and hopefully it will continue

interesting comments. At the LA Fitness near where I live in SoFL it's still shorts and jammers since it's a mostly 20-40 crowd. I have a couple of pairs of low Asian jammers, but I don't wear them anymore. Too much cloth. I'm sure they figure I'm old and/or Canadian.

Public 50m heated indoor pool I use is majority swim briefs, even the swim clubs members who range in ages from say 14 to 19 all wear briefs of different brands, all look good and well toned and you can see they at it daily.
Some of the older swimmers turn up in jammers but its far and few.

Well I have noticed a change from mainly board shorts to jammer now. But most are dark colors.

My 50m pool has several organized swim practices, and I notice the same, most of the young guys wear briefs. "Once you wear briefs, you never go back." is a quote I have heard there.

At our Masters meet yesterday it looked like about one in four guys wore a speedo.
You know that masters swimmers don't necessarily have great swim bods and pictures of most of them would not be appreciated in this forum. They are in better than average shape but that isn't really saying a lot nowadays, is it?
But it doesn't really matter whether they wear speedos or jammers, neither really flatters the typical mature male body.
Yes of course there were a few guys with great swimmer physiques but oddly they were more likely to be in jammers.
I chose this old thread to report this in because I felt one in four speedos to jammers is a major increase at the pool during a masters meet. More common might have been one in ten, maybe.

I swim in Boston and see more guys in speedo style briefs. I always wear them and when guys see other guys in them they switch over from jammers. I guess they don’t want to be the only guys in the pool in briefs. The college guys always swim in briefs.

I follow a lot of swim teams on Facebook and when they post photos it is only too obvious that some teams have the vast majority of boys in speedos. Notice that most coaching/instructional videos that come out in groups like SwimSwam have swimmers demonstrating drills and technique, they almost always wear briefs.
My daughter visited my sister in another state a couple years ago, she went to the local pool for a workout with the home swim team. My sister sent me a photo of her on deck with the group, a good sized one, the senior squad. You can see about twenty teen boys in it, every one of them in briefs.
Age group swim meet coverage on You Tube makes it obvious that LOTS of teens and little guys alike wear speedos.
