Swimathon

Post by Nate » Tue Mar 04, 2014 5:45 am

Hi guys,
I've mentioned this to a few of you during conversations via PM but I feel like I'm going to give this a go as a whole post as there's only 17 days left to go!

Basically, I'm going to be swimming 5km in one go for Sport Relief. - of course, I'll be rockin the briefs! :p

For those who may not know, Sport Relief is a charity event in the UK that raises money for all sorts of causes at home and abroad through the use of sport, it also encourages people in the UK to get active and hit the pool, cycle and run to fundraise.

I've been an avid swimmer for about 3 years now, in that space of time I've become a pool lifeguard and have begun training to become a swim teacher so I love swimming and hope to inspire people to get in the pool themselves, I truly believe it's the best form of exercise that anybody can get.

My original fundraising target was £100 - and so far I've been overwhelmed by donations and have smashed that target. If you would like to donate the link for my JustGiving page is https://my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/nate5k I would be grateful for any donation, any spare pound/dollar you have would be lovely :)

Training is going fairly well, my original target was to swim this in under 2 and a half hours, but after a few long distance swims I can now pretty comfortably say I should be able to do this in well under 2 hours!

Anyone here done a charity swim before? How did you get on?

I'm going for 2.5Km, my target is 1 hour. Speedos are currently concealed by drag shorts to get some training done. Sponsor at http://my.sportrelief.com/sponsor/peterforsaith

Thank you, Frank! :)

Peter, you're doing awesome on the fundraising front, I've just added my £10 on top too! Really well done. Are you prepared for Sunday?

Thanks Nate! Yes, all set for Sunday, did 1.5km today. In fact I'm going to miss the daily practice! But so looking forward to not wearing drag shorts, which I've worn for every swim over the last 2 months. Treated myself to a couple of lengths in speedos today, just to remind myself what liberty feels like!

Didn't think I'd raise that much over target myself!

All best for your swim - are we the only two?

Peter

Thanks for the sponsor Boywear!

I did my swim yesterday morning, i did it in 01:33:08 which im incredibly chuffed with.

The last 2500 flew by, cramp set in around the 3500 mark but fought through it.

Will definately do it again next year and try to improve on my time.

Just finished mine - 2.5km in just under 1hr 12min which is disappointing, but for over half the distance our lane was quite congested with slower swimmers, I only got into my usual pace approaching 2km.

Nate, I think I owe you a bit more money - that's a great time. I was helping at poolside yesterday and there was a 13 y-old who did 5km in about 1hr 20min, which is quick.

Hah the shoulders were aching over the weekend but recovered now. Taking a week off from the pool, itching to get back in now though!

There were loads of others doing it, it was packed. Quite a few speedos on show but mostly jammers and square-cuts. Not a pair of boardshorts in sight (at least I didn't see any, anyway).

And congratulations Peter! I'm already looking forward to next year. I'm hoping to organise an event at one of (or all) the pools I work at.
