Speedo Trends

Post by frankjath » Wed Mar 13, 2013 12:29 am

Hi guys, for a while now most guys in in the states went for long boardshorts, I want to propose the question do you think we are in a transition moving away from boardshorts and will speedos ever dominate as they use to? We can see some designers are blurring the lines by offering a wide range of styles, Andrew Christian designs mainly speedo style suits but offers one or two styles of boardshorts. Speedo style suits are popping up throughout popular culture as of late, an example of this would be this music video http://youtu.be/vKNcuTWzTVw. There was also a video from the guys over at Budgy Smuggler asking Ellen DeGeneres if she would come and stay with them as a guest http://youtu.be/qmzY1HSOOcE.

I was thinking of a cool future wear guys only wear boardshorts to and from but wear a speedo underneath their boardshorts and take the boardshorts off when they arrive at the pool, beach, waterpark, or spa, and maybe go even further as workout wear.

Here are more examples for your enjoyment.

The guy in this video could have easily chosen boardshorts but wears a speedo on his vacation.

Well, last summer here in Pennsylvania at my local county park pool, quite a few of the life guards and a few other guys wore small suits for swimming laps.

I also see some guys wearing them at the pool where I go for swim practice. Yes, young guys.

The thing is, don't be afraid what other people think - there is no point or benefit.

I think with the rise of such sports stars as Tom Daley and Ryan Lochte also becoming 'sex symbols' and such, we've seen a big influx of younger men trying the speedo suit. Whether it's because they think Lochte and Daley look good in them, or they know that many women think Lochte and Daley look good in them that they emulate these guys.

Fitness, in general, is on the rise. Alot of younger guys are taking up sports such as swimming and are finding that the speedo suit is a lot more practical than boardshorts. It's like attending the gym in a pair of jeans - you might aswell have the correct kit to maximise your performance, and i think a lot of guys are seeing it that way.

That's my two cents on the speedo trend. I think they'll become more fashionable in the coming years - with the Olympics in Rio in Brazil, one of the speedo capitals of the world, there's bound to be some interest in the swimwear!

Thanks guys for the input. I don't care what others think when it comes to my swimwear I am usually the only one on the beach wearing a speedo. Although jammers have become more popular. Last summer I did see one guy around my age wearing a speedo. Sometimes I wish I wasn't the only one on the beach wearing one but I guess that makes me unique. I have also wanted to wear my thong suit to the beach but I am not that brave. It covers the front fully and its a thong not a g-string so it provides more coverage with a thicker side bands and a thick back band. I guess I have to go to the gay beach aka Blacks beach in San Diego for that. Have any of you worn a thong suit on a regular beach.

No, I have not worn a thong. I know what you mean about wanting to be around other guys though. Need to find other lap swimmers, or like you said, gay beach.

Its good not to be so uptight.

Another 2 cents for the jar...

Sometimes I wear boardies, if I have sunburn. Here in Canada, boardies are the fashion. I usually wear a standard cut Speedo, but I have a few Sporti euro-cuts, and a Pistol Pete. Aside from my highrise pool, I swim at a beach on Georgian Bay in the summer, where I have spent over 50 summers, so the stand-out factor is not as great when I don my speedo, because people there grew up with me, or watched me grow up. They've seen me in less, when I was a toddler. So, I have a leg up in this situation.

At other public beaches, it's usually just me in the Speedo. Went with friends to Port Stanley on the shore of Lake Erie last year, a lovely breezy summer beach day, just me and another guy in speedos.

At the public pools I go to from time to time, at one locale (indoor), there are several older regulars (guys 60+), most of them in speedos, and they were them well! At another locale (outdoor), I went every weekday in the p.m. after work, and I kept watch, over the entire summer season only a count of 3 speedos! Me, another really buff young guy (who sadly, only appeared twice), and another guy I would peg 40-ish with his young daughter, and he sounded Polish when he spoke. Otherwise, board-o-rama.

I was going through some old National Geographics, and there was an article from the 1970s on life in the (now former) Soviet Union. One photo was a beach on the Black Sea. All of the guys had speedo-style swimsuits. I also have an interesting book in my library from even earlier Soviet times (c. 1960) and it features people swimming on the Neva and its the same deal--every guy in a speedo-like suit, and a recently published book on post-Soviet Russia in my work library shows pictures of beaches and the guys are still wearing speedo-like suits. There appears not to have been a "rush" to wear boardies after the fall of the iron curtain and the ensuing mass wave of westernization that washed over Eastern Europe over the last few decades.

I know the Soviets fostered this cult of "fizikulturna"--basically a government mandate that all citizens be fit, and I suppose the attitude was "this is the male form." The Soviets might have done bad things, but this aspect of fitness culture was not one of them.

I never feel self-conscious, and I can't say I have ever got negative comments in public places. I don't know what the deal is here in North America. Many people think wearing a speedo means a guy is vain, or thinks everybody wants him, or is an exhibitionist. Hopefully, these attitudes will disappear over time.

Even though I find boardies uncomfortable for laps, I say to each his own, and if guys prefer to wear them, for whatever reason, then let them. Guys can still look pretty hot in boards, especially if they have a nice high tight butt, and really good calves. The boards hang nicely on the behind, and stop just short of the calves, showing off these features in an attractive way. A nice look, if you ask me.

Just 2 more cents.

PS--I think I've said all this before in other posts, sorry to be repetitive, but as the saying goes..."I've said it before, and I'll say it again..." :)

PPS: If there are any members from Russia or Eastern Europe on this board, I would be interested to know if there was any trend among guys over there to sport boardies rather than speedo-like suits in the post-communist era. Maybe just the actual Speedo brand became more popular/available. Curious. Actually, today, I had a peek at a recently published book about Bulgaria, and there was a beach photo with guys wearing boardies.
