This might be a bad time to raise this issue with the election recently being called, and I don't want create a political discussion, but does Mr Abbott's speedo help the cause of getting wider acceptance for my preferred swimwear?

For those overseas, Mr Abbott is the local opposition leader of the conservative party.

I have absolutely no idea how the political scene looks in Australia, but I'd say this press photo isn't the most flattering. It fits him well, but his mouth is all agape and he doesn't look like the photogenic type.

I can't see how his wearing a speedo type suit would influence the general buying public. Can't really imagine anyone going "Wow, he looks hot, I want to look like that at the beach"
If you got someone like Justin Beiber (ugh) in a speedo, probably all prepubescent teens would want one cuz their girlfriends were going crazy over him. (to me he just would reinforce the thought that gays wear speedos)

I just like that he's a politician in a country where wearing Speedos is considered normal and routine, and that (I assume) nobody there is second guessing or even making a big deal of the fact that he is wearing one. Not that I have a burning desire to see any of our politicians here in the USA wearing a speedo, but I wish our society here was also one where wearing speedos is so common that it would not be unusual to see a speedo on any guy even politicians.

I think he wasnt good for wearing speedos. The news wasnt good. If it was somebody who had an element of apeal then it may have been different. Beiber would have done much more for speedo wearing.

Beiber in speedos would definitely improve their street cred.

I disagree on that idea 500%. If Bieber had on a speedo, besides looking horrible, it would have guys everywhere saying "I'm not wearing a suit like that little sissy ass wears!" Put Matt Damon in a speedo and you have speedo sales soaring -- guys want to look like him and girls want their men to look like him -- win win!

I kinda agree with the Bieber thing, yes - he would look amazing and I'm sure we'd love to see him in speedos, but I don't think it will do anything to convert people into liking them.

Hugh Jackman, maybe...

And I know that Aussie Rules football and Aussie rugby players are often seen sporting speedos down at the beach, in training or sometimes even on the field when they're shorts are being pulled down. I think these guys do well for the image.

Our Justin is a very skinny boy, maybe with the right cut of suit he could pull it off, but he looked really gaunt running through that Polish airport shirtless in jeans. He's been having a rough patch lately. Wouldn't mind seeing that Jensen Ackles in a speedo.

And, also Canada's very own David E. Paetkau:

Damon? You bet. He came pretty close in The Talented Mr. Ripley on the beach scene in Italy, wearing a yellowish 1950s style square cut, and even though the Clark Kent style glasses were supposed to nerd him up a notch, well, they failed, like, how could you make someone so hot looking look nerdy?
