I was reading a swim.com post earlier today and saw.. "Fear of the Speedo" .. I was in the process of picking out my favorite "quotes" from this topic for comment, but there was just too many. I was really  to see someone talking about swimming improvement and still swimming in boardies.. ugh!

I reckon some men fear speedos due to body self-consciousness or being the only fella at the pool wearing budgie smugglers. Fair enough.

Having said that, boardies absorb approximately 2 litres of water every time a guy gets out of the pool. This has become such a problem in Austria (i.e. too much water going missing from pools) that they are or are considering banning boardies.

Also, apparently Austrians drink too much pool water, too! The secret is don't swallow.

Funny! That story was quoted in NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me last week..

Yeah that would be great if they would ban board shorts in american pools but I think one of us would have to become dictator for that to happen, haha

Hi freestyle:
Here's my advice: Just wear a speedo and don't worry about it.

By the way, at least half (maybe 3/4) of the recreational swimmers here in San Francisco wear speedos and no one here thinks it's a big deal.

Also, any guy who fears wearing a speedo might want to take a look at the "bulge" created by wearing jammers!!!

I have fear wearing Speedo type or bikini. Going to swim I often wore briefs or bikinis, but there were always some reaction of giggles from others here in the US. :x

I fear the speedo because I don't think speedos and big bellies should go together.

I'm worried about scaring the natives ... well, scaring everybody, really.

california dolfin is right, I notice way more speedos in california and feel totally comfortable swimming there in speedos as it is no big deal.

My one pair of Asian cut jammers is surprisingly bulgy. My Speedo-brand pair isn't so much...

California: I pretty much only swim in a speedo, if I'm swimming for a workout. If I'm swimming for fun I'll usually wear a box/mid or Boardies. I posted the article because I thought it was suprising an would spark a good discussion. I'm surprised NPR quoted it. Cheers, FS

The fear of the speedo could exist becauseof the negative views they get. I was checking out the site www.slice.ca and came across this link with 5 negative comments about speedos. The comments were based on this question:
You've seen him, maybe this past weekend. The guy that no one really wants to see at the beach... The notorious "Speedo"- wearer. We want to ask you, is it ever appropriate for a guy to wear these?

The link: http://www.slice.ca/strut/SliceBlog/Blo ... 7#Comments

In case anyone has trouble to access the dumbass comments, I copied them:

Never... unless he is completely waxed, and is in a swimming competition

I'd rather not see them at the beach at all. :)

Never! The only time a man should be wearing a speedo is if he is in a swimming competition!

No. Never. Not even Olympians wear them anymore

BTW, these comments were from females

It seems very "double standard" like to me

Of course it's a double standard. The comments came from women.

i would also just like to put this out there.... that being a competitive swimmer, and ESPECIALLY sense FINA banned all but jammer and speedo type suits for racing in... speedos are still very much live and well, even at the Olympics. in fact judging by the last swim meets i went to, they were more popular than the jammers, as most male swimmers were rocking the speedos. (mind you my experience only extends to the maritimes of Canada)
