Jace,

At school I always changed under a towel and despite the heat here in summer after a PE class most guys wouldn't shower anyways - only ever used the shower after a swim class.

It is odd though isn't it.

I do remember a couple of the older guys at school who would prance around the showers naked infront of us younger guys but that wasn't the norm.

Americans are too conservative

Post by speedostl » Sun Jun 25, 2006 7:19 pm

Thats because most americans are way too conservative. I went out in my sisters and brother in laws boat and tried to stirp down to my speedo to get a decent tan and right away my sister had a fit. She said not to show my speedo because she lived around the area that we were boating in and did not want me to make a scene. there was no problem with the women on the beach wearing ther skimpy swimwear just me. just goes to show how uptight americans are about there own or others bodys.

SpeedoStl,

That is nuts mate. I know in Oz and in NZ speedos are acceptable. I saw on the news last night here in NZ there was a swim for charity (being mid winter here) and most of the guys swimming were in speedos.

Most of the guys I talk with online are from US or Aussie/NZ - I wonder what the feel is in Europe.

In europe it really varies from country to country.

On the shower topic, I know for example in germany where i visited, communal showers are popular. I was staying in a hostel and and it had one.... after the showers all the guys would just walk through the hall way in tight briefs or boxer briefs.

I went for the shower too.... and it was quite "hard" I tried to keep the water as cold as possible... which didnt really help.

As for speedos. I was on a beach in Spain, and hardly any young guys wore speedos there, it was a more common thing with the older population. When i got to Italy, ALOT of older guys wore speedos, and id say 20-30% of yonger guys wore them too, and often id see a circle of freinds and 1 of them might wear a speedo while the rest don't, my interpretation from that is that ppl are cool about others doing it, otherwise peer pressure would win over. Lastly, I was on a beach in Ukraine.... where actully it was 99% russian population. And there over 90% of everyone wears speedos. And the best part, they also walk around in them far away from the beach.

I found that the more ppl wore a speedos in one place, the more attention you gave them. When I was in Ukraine, that was the only place where i went to the beach with my mom because i traveled the rest of europe by myself. And there with my mom, my cousin, and my aunt, i wore a speedo for the first time in front of them and felt totally comfortable cause its the norm there. My mom eventually did ask where i got it, i told her Italy in order to go scuba diving.... so its all good now.

In general Eastern europe is still big on speedos, while the rest of europe varies. For example in France i know speedos are mandatory in swimming pools, while on beaches i hear less ppl wear them, but still enough.

Alex,

Thanks for the speedo intel on Europe. I've never been to Europe.

I know some backpackers that I've been to around Australia have communal showers BUT you still have your own stall - not an open air kind of thing.

I'm not sure how I'd handle that actually - I'd be rock hard just thinking about going in there.

Justin,

Lol that was my problem. My thoughts fucked me up lol.

Basicly i was in a room with a 1 shower and 10 beds, I tend to take LONG showers, so im like.... "i'll just go down the hall". Now b4 that happend i saw all those hot euro boys walking around in their tight ass boxer briefs and so i had the sex thoughts on my mind going in lol. This was btw in Berlin, on the weekend of the World Cup finals, so the whole city was swelling with the cutest euro dudes you could imagine. Lots of soccer dudes wearing small shorts showing off their legs... use your imagination.... lol

Now i went to take the shower late in morning, so there wouldnt have been many ppl. I started without anyone there and was instantly getting a semi, but i was determine to get the wash done lol

Then came in a guy, and my semi didnt go away. I kept facing him with my ass but im 100% certain he saw it a number of times lol... Oh well, he was gone in ONE minute! Lol i wonder if i scared him away. But yeah, it was hard to hid my excitement lol

After the shower i was still horny and went and jerked off in one of the washroom stalls, i didnt need more than 30 seconds lol. The smart thing would have been to do this b4 going into the shower. I learned my lesson. And id def still give the communal shower a try! lol

See, speedos caused me to get excited at first too, but now its nothing out of the ordinary, so i figure the same would be the case for the shower.

I would have thought that most Australians prefer wearing board shorts to speedos?

I find comments made about the United States on the verge of comical. It is a country built on immigrants and actually a combination of three nations over the years (Britain, France, Spain) The backgrounds and attitudes from one area of the country to another can be entirely different. Hell, within in California alone, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco are all entirely different in feel and attitude. Hell, the 5 burroughs of New York City are all entirely different.
When someone makes a blanket statement that includes all people in the US it indicates they have a very limited knowledge or very limited experience on the subject.
The same goes for Europe. I see so often on this board that Europeons all wear speedos. However, in the area of my vacation cottage in the south of France the only men wearing speedos are over 50. All younger are in board shorts with a few in square cuts. When I go every year I take a dozen or so pairs os A&F, Hurley, and Quicksiler suits to give away. (very costly there)
So, when making blanket statements about a country you are showing your lack of knowledge or experience. Because you were at a beach that no one had on speedos, don't say that no one in the States wear speedos. At that beach--right, no one that day had on speedos. However, 5 or 10 miles down the coast there may be a beach that is populated by large numbers of speedos. There may also be a totally nude beach. If you had landed at the nude beach would you declare that all US beaches were nude?
One experience does not make one an expert on a society.

You raise a good point - the very same beach on two different days can be totally different. And especially when travelling, its hard to tell what the norm is - you see a tiny glimpse of the culture and people of the country - That's why its easier to just wear what you want to wear and forget about it! :P

Regarding the O.P. It does seem strange. We had shower stalls at school, but rarely used them - only after swimming or after footy in the rain. But in terms of swimming we could wear whatever we wanted, wasn't odd to see people wear speedos though.
