Does speedo/swim brief wearing motivate your diet, strength training and cardio?

Post by Speedoguy1971 » Thu Mar 20, 2025 9:12 am

I was issued my first swim brief by parents in the 1970s at around 4-5 years old. Swim briefs were popular and mainstream then. Rolling into the 1980s they were less mainstream in north Texas where I grew up. I was chunky from my teens until my 30s but began wearing my swim briefs again when I was 16 years old in backyard pool/private despite my chunking build. In my 30’s my dad bod kicked in. To feel good in my preferred swimwear, I lost a lot of weight, got fit and became proud of my body. Since then, I have been a diehard swimmer, runner, biker, you name it, along with moderate regular strength training. I am also very conscientious of my dietary macros. To this day I proudly wear my speedo in public on boat at mainstream beaches, hotels with family and friends. I believe if it were not for my preference of athletic briefs I wouldn’t have maintained my health as I have. What about you guys? Happy Speedoing!

Always an athletic active guy I’ve prided myself in my fitness levels and body aesthetics. I’ve been a swim brief guy forever. I’ve gone though the board shorts jammer phase but always have come back to briefs. Comfort function and style always win. That being said it’s become more difficult to maintain weight and physique as I’ve gotten older. I too regularly swim for my cardio, lift weights for muscle definition and lots of core for back and mid section definition. And I watch what I consume all of which keep me looking good and maintaining energy levels. So to answer your real question I’m not sure what really motivates what other than I still look great in my speedos as reinforced by my wife and friends and unknown people we encounter on vacations that are envious that I have the body and confidence to wear a speedo at my age

Yes, that is part of it. Lucky to have a physical job so not much of a gym bunny. Wearing a speedo or small sportswear is always an incentive to watch the weight.

Yup, absolutely! I was always intrigued by speedos and appreciated seeing fit guys in them. But, I felt like a skinny runt and didn't have much confidence to wear them myself. In my 30s, I started noticing I was getting a 'skinny-fat' belly, and I decided it's now-or-never to improve my body condition and look more like the speedo guys I admired. I started weightlifting and eating more clean. It wasn't a crazy transformation: lost 5 pounds of fat and then put on 15 pounds of muscle. But, my confidence went up, and I was much happier with my physique. I like how I look in a speedo now, and it motivates me to keep going to the gym, even on days when I don't feel like it.

Your confidence is well earned. You look great. Keep up the good work. I faced a very similar experience.

It does help the motivation! Worn speedos for nearly 50 years, but with more exercising and keeping to a "diet" (not dieting per se, just limiting what I eat/drink, and no snacks/junk) since I turned 60 or so, the past ten years - I now wear them everywhere. Always did pretty much, but now even at our YC pool.

Limit carbs, dessert, and NO fries! Meat/veges/fruit/little dairy/little bread --

Thank you for sharing… You guys all look terrific and great in your suits. Thank you for the comments. I wish I had the courage to post my pics as a proud Speedo wearer. I never plan to stop wearing my Speedo at any age.

Florida panhandle area for me. One of the few in this area that wears them on beach.

Where do you guys reside?
