In my area southern side of Sydney laps/coaching is almost entirely Speedos. Perhaps 90%.
The culture for lap swimming here is that you are the weirdo if not in Speedos.

People just having a splash will be in shorts.
Where I live in the southern US, it's the complete opposite. I've gotten to know pretty much all of the other speedo guys who regularly swim at my gym by sight because there are so few of us.

It has struck me and not for the first time that, fashion for lack of a better word, moves around. I grew up on Arrow and Beau Brummel shirts, and yes actual Speedo suits. Now I’m lucky to find them anywhere. The Internet helps with finding these things, but sometimes you’re buying them from some place on the other side of the planet. Life is not and never was easy, but then they go and move things.

Speedo is still the main name brand in swimsuits among the swimming crowd. Swimming crowd as in those who swim daily for fitness and competition.
That's not a real big cross section of society. So even sporting goods stores don't have much real serious swim gear.
Thank God for swimoutlet.com as they are the top go-to source for college, high school, masters and age group teams. The selection is amazing and the price unbeatable. Yes, even for swim briefs and name brands other than Speedo. With that, there really shouldn't be any complaining about swimsuit availability.

That's the case with everything these days. The cost of everything being available on the internet is that retail stores can't make a living on specialised stuff, so they have a very small range and stick with mainstream stuff everyone buys multiple of, like clothes and shoes.

For most sports once you go beyond mid level you need to go online, often the online specialists do have a limited hours walk-in shop somewhere, but odds of it being close are low.

Where I train, it’s 100% speedo briefs for all swimmers! ;)We on occasion will have a
visiting Tri-Dude wearing a jammer but noticed that if he makes it thru the workout and comes back for another workout then he’s got on a speedo. Unspoken pier pressure, I guess! LOL

It’s funny, when I swam competitively everyone wore trunks for extra drag in training then stripped to speedos for meets.

body2205 : ‘times are changing’ ! 😀 at swim practice for high school and master swimming it’s all briefs for the boys and the funkier the color suit the better ! Girls wear their suits pulled up their butt crack (think thong look) and boys wear their suits really low on the hips barely above their junk(trimmed /shaved) barely above crack in back. At college level, it’s more sexually charged because everyone is 18 yrs old/adult and away from parents! That’s the wild practices: a ‘naked swim practice day’ or boys team will pull their junk out at the crouch and swim the whole practice that way! Everyone pretty creative for sure! All done for fun or a laugh but advertising for sure ! 😂 they are trying to mix it up from doing long repetitive interval training stuff! I really see briefs making a come back and Dude’s wanting to wear them at the pool when swim related. Our pool deck mindset is your not a serious swimmer unless your wearing a speedo brief! At serious meets its jammers only for the boys -FYI - all about speed/time then !!

So lots of “eye-candy” ! 😂😂😂

I’d say the men at masters practice here are 40% brief-60% jammer. I think some of the older men are more conservative and even affiliated with the place we swim at so they want to maintain “professionalism” - and I say that in quotes noting that I don’t think speedos/briefs are unprofessional we all know that’s a common opinion.

The boys/age groupers are definitely more brief, probably 80% or greater. Speedos ONLY for this guy!

The other day, my regular lap swim pool cleared out enough that only 4 of the 6 lanes were occupied, and all 4 guys were in speedos. That doesn’t happen very often, but it was really pleasing to notice.
