Gym Motivation

Post by shadowmn » Mon Mar 19, 2018 2:56 am

Well my wife and I booked a trip to Aruba in the fall so I really have to get my butt in gear. Knowing that I'll get to wear my speedo helps motivate me to stay in shape, but I also find that wearing lycra compression shorts at the gym also helps my motivation.

Do any of you wear spandex/lycra shorts at the gym? I have a few pairs of 2XU shorts which are awesome.

I wear briefs under my shorts at the gym. Sometimes I wear a Speedo for extra support. Not to keen on compression shorts.
Love speedos, running shorts, rugby shorts, Aussie rules footy shorts.

I have those same 2XU shorts in the link! They're awesome for mountain bike trail riding. I'd actually like to wear something like that to the gym, but I go to Planet Fitness and I don't think it'd fly there. They don't even like guys wearing tank tops.

I'd go trail riding even without the compression shorts, so I'm not sure it's a motivator. But it is nice to be able to wear my preferred clothing option and have it be completely normal, since most guys out there are wearing the same.

I wear Pearl Izumi bike shorts when I go mountain biking. I actually prefer having the padded crotch when I ride.

Are you staying this time around? When we went, we stayed at the Marriott Renaissance Aruba that had the private island. It was pretty easy and definitely not crowed like the hotels in the resort area.

I wear bike bib shorts or tights for road and mountain biking, a good pad is a must!

We're staying at the Marriott Resort & Stellaris Casino. We stayed there last time and enjoyed it.

Usually I will wear compression shorts if I’m running or doing legs, but other than that usually briefs. Obviously with shorts overs them lmfao. Jed North makes some great shorts to work out on. Their Agile shorts or pretty short and tight, but they are perfect for leg day cause you get a great range of motion when doing squats.

They don't like people wearing a singlet designed for sport/working out/lifting weights, to a gym? That's an odd policy.

I think that’s the difference between Australia and the states. The states can be Uber conservative

They call it gymtimidation. Apparently showing off muscles scares away their target market of people who wouldn't normally go to the gym.

It's an odd mix of the old-style conservatism that says people should be ashamed to show their bodies along with the new far-liberal nonsense that we can't risk inadvertently body-shaming the less fit or offending anyone.

I don’t want to insult anyone who goes to Planet Fitness but to explain to those who don’t know, Planet Fitness targets gym newbies. They don’t want anyone there who might intimidate the overweight and out of shape crowd. I’ve heard that there are rules against doing heavy deadlifts and squats etc. You can’t grunt. People have had their contracts canceled because their physiques were too intimidating. They are really cheap but their business plan is to get a lot of people to sign up but then not come to the gym. They have to have a lot of members to make a profit but if they all came there wouldn’t be enough room for everyone. Basically it’s a good place for people starting out but not the best place for more advanced fitness enthusiasts.

I wear 2xu compression shorts to the gym and when I run. Always commando and never with anything over the top. That is what they are designed for - I never understood why people wear shorts on top. Yes you can see a bulge at times but so what

Every time I see a guy at the gym with loose shorts over compression tights, I think: 1) That looks silly. And 2) There's a guy who loves spandex and would ditch those shorts in a second if it were more "socially acceptable".

I go to planet fitness too and while it is true that we are not allowed to grunt the thing about not being allowed to wear tank tops are not true at all at least in the planet fitness I go to. people both men and women wear tank tops all the time to the gym. it seems idiotic to me not to allow tank tops in the gym.

I always wear Nike compression tights to the gym and never wear anything over it. I'm totally with you on it. people need to grow up. so what if you can see the VPL? male humans have penises deal with it. I also agree with you that wearing shorts over tights seems silly to me and I've tried wearing shorts over tights in my room and when I look at myself in the mirror I was like "...nah this doesn't work" I think people care too much about what others think. I come to the gym to workout and I need to dress so that I have good mobility. Plus I never really care what people think, it's my life, my gym time, my rule if they don't like what they see then too bad.

I should clarify... it's the low-cut or narrow-shoulder "bodybuilder" tank tops that my PF specifically bans. There are signs. I've seen a couple of the more "full coverage" tanks, but almost all the guys still wear t-shirts w/sleeves.

But I guess I need to go to your PF, Rozelle! You'd inspire me to break out my Nike tights, too!
