Australia's Speedo Culture

Post by DaveSpeedoEvans » Wed Sep 24, 2014 12:11 pm

Hey guys,

I wrote about this topic today on my blog which has a new address - www.AussieSpeedoGuy.org

Kip has mentioned that he really hasn’t seen many guys in speedos here in Australia.

That might be able to change with the temps supposed to get to 30C (86F) on Sunday which will be our first real burst of summer. Hopefully some of the clubbies (people who hang out at the surf life saving club) will be out training. My str8 mates wear speedos under their wetsuit but otherwise Kip really hasn’t seen any speedos outside the bedroom.

I think that perhaps it is a bit of a myth that speedos are commonplace down under.

I think that most guys will own a speedo, most guys will wear a speedo under their board shorts or under the wetsuit, most guys will wear a speedo in the open if it is for lap swimming or training or something like that, and I’d even say that if there was no alternative guys would be OK speedo’ing it up, say at a party and everyone had drunk too much….. but socially, it is still a no-no.

My comparison is when I was in Breckenridge I used to swim probably 4 times a week and I never saw a single other swimmer in speedos. Here in Aussie, I have only seen a handful of guys not wearing speedos.

Every cross your fingers for Kip this weekend that he sees some Aussie guys in their speedos. The weather forecast for Monday is looking fantastic as well so maybe we’ll find a quiet beach for some outdoor speedo fun of our own…. any suggestions on what we should get up to? Or beaches to go to?

So sad if true. Has it always been that way? What about years or decades past before American boardshort cultural attitudes influenced/poluted the rest of the world?
