Hi ,
Anyone have recommendations on places to stay in Tulum, Playa del Carmen and other towns south of Cancun? I have been to the area but when there was very little development. There is even a place selling itself as a gay resort called Adonis that I am curious about. I am looking for input (and of course the standard request for the best beaches full of speedo clad men ;-) )
Any help is appreciated!

Adonis is a very quiet smaller gay place & will certainly have lots in speedos at the pool & beach but out of the way from Cancun Look it up in google or yahoo for full description If you want a bit of action or some fun or things to do I would recommend Puerto Vallarta which has many gay accommodations available at all price ranges /many clubs themes from gogo to piano bar gay/ day cruises /Zip lines for day of fun/ Tea Parties/ easy to get around to the venues or a $10 cab or 10c bus My favourite things to do is spend a day or more at Blue Chairs on Muertos Beach where you you can wear & see some of the sexiest speedos & meet others from around the world at a great beach in or out of the sun along with a cool beer My second favourite thing to is take the gay day cruise Wet & Wild for 5 hours of fun/ open bar /music/lunch/ special beach & feel comfortable wearing the speedo you always wanted to wear & lots of eye candy on board [ Cost is $75 US but you get your monies worth] If funds are scarce just walk comfortably up & down the beach in your speedos & see the sites & get a great tan CANCUN also has some good gay attractions & speedo activity but not as much as PV

Re: Tulum, Mexico & area
Thanks so much for the info. I was in Mexico about 3 weeks ago and avoided a blizzard while I was away. I almost stayed at Adonis but we ended up staying near Playa del Carmen. The place was not very gay but that did not stop me from parading around in a variety of skimpy speedos all week. Fortunately, I was not the only one. I will have to check out Puerto Vallarta, I have heard about the day cruises from friends, sounds fun.
For now the speedo tan line is fading but when I see it, I remember gorgeous weather and lots of fun.
Cheers!

Glad you got away from the terrible weather the eastern Canada & US had & I am happy you paraded around in your skimpy speedos Wish I had been there to see [ HaHA] but I was in Barbados which is very concervative & you have to have balls to wear anything in the bikini line Just about anywhere in Mexico you can do this but at some hotels the quests are the ones that generally turn their noses up or make comments Many French Canadians will parade around in speedos even though some just should not but they are there to have fun Do try PV the next time you go away & I am sure you will have a great time How about posting about showing your tan line & speedos ? Cheers

My experiences in Mexico is less than favorable. One time at the beach I was just laying in the sun in a 2" speedo and some locals came up -- called me a fag and beat the crap out of me.
Another similar incident near a popular restaurant, only I think they were more interested in stealing my passport to get into the US, but the words were there.
I'll never go back to Mexico, the drug lords rule the streets and police, too many are getting robbed, beaten or abducted. I prefer less drama in my vacations.

To tanned bum, I am really sorry to hear about your terrible encounter. I had the polar opposite experience. People at the resort and in Playa were very friendly and I have never felt more welcome. These were not just people working for a tip or wanting us to buy something. I have been to the Yucatan region 3 times and every time has been an awesome trip. I have heard people say things about some of the areas on the west coast but never about Playa del Carmen and the surrounding region.
I have traveled all over the world and have learned that a smile and an attempt to say hello in the local language goes a long way ( not to say that you did not do this).
Next trip, Sweden in June......

To tanned bum So sorry to hear of your difficulties in Mexico & I quite agree with you that there are areas to stay away from just like our own countries Drug dealers have made many things different I have been going to Mexico for over 35 years & never had a problem but I have never gone into an area without a local I trust never been walking drunken through un-lit back streets off the beaten track always stayed on the beach close enough to other people yet far away enough for some privacy never been out in the wee hours of the morning alone never carry a lot of cash or wear valuables never take your passport but take your tourist card [leave it locked up at the hotel or room safe] Always remember do not do things that you would no at home Anywhere in the world one has to be vigilant & keep their eyes & ears open & use a bit of common sense & street smarts Always found that if you stay in Puerto Vallarta Cancun Cabos Mazatlan you will be safe keeping the above in mind however I would avoid Acapulco for the time being & the Norhern States in Mexico & never drive at night Best is to put a smile on you face & a few spanish words help
