It's probably not you ... there is a known bug right now with avatar uploads, which is why you see so many with the dreaded "red X" (including mine...)
Dave has said that he is working on it so we all hope it will be resolved soon ...
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to PM any of the mods - we would all be glad to help out ...
