If the cord has a plastic sleeve on the tip, like a new shoelace, usually it's not too hard to manipulate the end along--push the tip foward, grab the tip through the fabric and pull the fabric back...

Check out YT for PAC-12 womens college swimming dual meets. Stanford, USC, Cal, etc. It looks like they've agreed to forego the clunky knee-length racing suits and they just wear their regular 1-piece suits. It's a wedgiefest to behold!

There are wild variations in drawcord quality. The ones that don't stay tight unless you double-knot them? Those will make an ugly bulge and may even be irritating. '73 that is badass! I've seen a couple pools prohibit thongs on their posted general rules signs, but all that was over a decade ago. You CAN'T really prohibit them anymore, what with women's wear completely obliterating the lines between thong/cheeky/minimal coverage now.
