Yes...just before that unfortunate fall into the trunks/jammers/board shorts even in Europe!! When I was on Malta for a week in the late 80's everybody was in a speedo if not a bikini!

Yes..that was a turning point when the swimsuit catalogs ( as well as underwear) just simply referred to some of their products as "bikinis".
I love it too. For me it's a combo of the narrow sides and how low it rides below the navel.

Hey guys, I want to expand my speedo collection since the majority I own are speedo brand and navy or black. (pretty boring) If anyone has suggestions on their favourite brands/ types I'd be all ears. I'd be interested more in something to swim in practically but then of course also look/feel good ...

I'm enjoying this discussion. Yes, the side measurements are significant for sure. For me, as a kid growing up, it was how low below the navel it rode that made some guys ( and girls) make little quips about it being a bikini.
